A relentless focus on embracing data and analytics to provide sports fans with the most relevant information, insights, and content has defined Action Network since the company was founded in October 2017 by The Chernin Group (TCG).
Our journey began with a seemingly simple goal of creating a premium sports analysis and media company that served the $170+ billion sports betting industry and fantasy sports market.
What began as three separate, well-known businesses in the sports betting and daily fantasy world has grown into a sports betting product and media company focused on creating and sharing tools that turn average sports fans into sports experts.
The three companies that were combined to create Action Network -- SportsAction, a bet-tracking and scores app; Sports Insights, a high-end betting terminal for pros; and FantasyLabs, a daily fantasy modeling platform -- offered both free services and subscription-based tools to their loyal users and have served as the base on which Action has been built.
Wanting to take advantage of the rapidly evolving sports media landscape and audience demand for credible sports betting products and information, the company hired several prominent industry executives and personalities to continue building the company.
In October 2017, Chad Millman joined the company as Chief Content Officer (CCO). Millman was previously Editor-in-Chief for ESPN The Magazine and ESPN.com and was instrumental in the early months, helping to officially launch Action Network in January 2018, just five months before the Supreme Court lifted the federal ban on sports betting.
Shortly after the official launch of Action Network, the company announced the appointment of Patrick Keane as CEO in November 2018. Later that same month, sports business analyst Darren Rovell joined the company on November 28, 2018. Rovell previously worked for ESPN and CNBC.
Together, Millman, Keane, and Rovell (along with Ari Borod, who left Action Network to become Chief Business Officer at Fanatics in July 2021) forged exclusive partnerships with professional leagues and added to Action Network’s already-advanced tech platform. Action Network grew rapidly, developing its mobile app and browser-based experiences by offering best-in-market editorial coverage, live scores, odds, and bet tracking.
The company's success drew interest from the investment community, resulting in the sale of Action Network to global sports betting media group Better Collective for $240 million on May 3, 2021.
Sean Koerner is the Director of Predictive Analytics at Action, leveraging proprietary models and his award-winning projections to make data-driven recommendations, possessing the rare power to move markets based on what he’s betting – the primary reason he’s built a following of more than 100,000 in the Action app. Thanks to his NFL projections, Sean is also one of most-accurate fantasy football rankers of the past decade, placing first in FantasyPros’ expert rankings contest three times since 2016.
Sean has been playing fantasy football since he was eight, but he launched his sports betting career by learning to build models, eventually becoming a supervisor at the Excalibur Sportsbook in Las Vegas. With a background that also included time in product management at Bloomberg Sports (later acquired by Stats Perform), Sean’s unique blend of experience is one of the many reasons for Action has established itself as a trusted source for expert sports betting advice.
Stuckey set the tone for sports betting experts at Action having been the first hired in 2017, establishing a foundation of credibility that eventually led to him becoming the first verified expert to reach 100,000 followers in the Action app. His relentless pursuit of serving college football and basketball fans high-quality picks and analysis is the heartbeat of Action’s college sports brand, BBOC.
Before pursuing sports betting full-time, Stuckey spent nearly a decade in finance as a derivatives analyst after completing his MBA and becoming a CFA charter holder. But having bet almost daily since 2003, sports betting was always his first passion.
Collin Wilson is a senior sports betting analyst who specializes in college football for Action, often turning to his proprietary power ratings to recommend picks on BBOC, the multi-platform college sports betting brand he helped establish in 2018. Collin powers Action’s college baseball coverage while also contributing to college basketball, MLB, and on other topics.
Before joining Action, Collin worked in software consulting after completing his Masters of Science Computer Engineering at the University of Arkansas.
Sean Zerillo leverages his proprietary models to fuel Action’s MLB PRO Projections, serving his more than 100,000 followers in the Action app with baseball picks on a near-daily basis over the nine-month marathon of baseball while anchoring the Payoff Pitch podcast and serving audiences content across all platforms. Sean also leverages his MMA and horse racing projections to make data-driven recommendations for every UFC pay-per-view and Triple Crown race.
Sean was a baseball video scout for Sports Info Solutions before he joined Action in 2019, having also passed the New York State Bar Exam after graduating from Hofstra Law School.
BJ Cunningham fuels Action’s soccer coverage across platforms, leveraging his proprietary projections on primarily European soccer to guide American fans through betting the Premier League as well as international tournaments like the World Cup, delivering picks to Action app users and Wondergoal podcast listeners nearly year-round. BJ also models baseball, making him a staple in the Payoff Pitch podcast rotation, as well as college football.
Before launching his sports betting career at Action in 2020, BJ worked as a financial auditor.
Brandon Anderson has established himself as a sports betting futures specialist, closely monitoring championship and other season-long markets for the best values in the NFL and NBA. While he loves a longshot, Brandon also bets game markets (including player props), directing his more than 100,000 followers in the Action app and listeners on podcasts like Buckets to the smartest picks of a given day.
Before joining Action, Brandon’s insights were featured in Sports Illustrated's The Cauldron, BetMGM Sports and elsewhere.
Matt Moore has spent nearly two decades covering the NBA, emerging as one of the internet’s most popular basketball opinionists after launching his own blog (Hardwood Paroxysm) then establishing himself in mainstream digital media with stints at CBS Sports and elsewhere before joining Action in 2017. Matt is the heartbeat of Action’s cross-platform NBA coverage, giving fans a piece of the action every weekday on the Buckets podcast.
Matt is known as a leading analyst on the NBA’s MVP race, having voted for the award previously. He’s also worked at NBC Sports and AOL FanHouse.
Chris Raybon is a prolific NFL bettor, winning more than 100 units on picks tracked in the Action app over his first five seasons as a verified expert (2018-2023) for what are now his 100,000+ followers. Chris is also well-known for being one of the most consistently accurate forecasters in fantasy football with top-five finishes in the FantasyPros’ expert accuracy contest (2020 and 2022). In addition to the NFL, Chris also specializes in NBA betting.
Chris worked in finance before becoming a full-time sports gaming content creator with stops at numberFire, RotoGrinders, and 4for4 before joining Action.
Chad Millman is one of the chief architects of American sports betting media, having created the gambling beat during his time as Editorial Director of ESPN Digital and editor-in-chief of ESPN The Magazine (2011-2017). Now as the Chief Content Officer of the Action Network, Chad oversees the cross-platform content operation while hosting the popular year-round football betting podcast, The Favorites.
Chad has written four New York Times’ bestsellers and his career featured a stint at Sports Illustrated.
Simon Hunter is a longtime professional gambler, anchoring half of the popular year-round NFL betting podcast The Favorites, which he joined in 2019 after having reached out to his co-host Chad Millman about ways to improve how picks were made on NFL spreads and over/unders. Now the two partner on an annual free-to-play contest with listeners.
Simon launched his career in sports betting when he connected with a syndicate in Las Vegas while visiting on a work trip for the production company he previously worked for – what Simon calls "10 years of the best sports betting education one could ever ask for."
PJ Walsh has been writing sports betting content for Action before the network even existed in its current form. As the Director of Subscription Content, PJ now specializes in analyzing Action’s proprietary data and tools such as PRO Projections to identify insights with the biggest betting edges for Action’s audience on a given day.
PJ started at Sports Insights in 2009 before it was acquired by the Chernin Group in 2017 as part of the Action Network, which then joined Better Collective in 2021.
Billy Ward is a predictive analyst who specializes in the creation of models, such as the first-running one he leverages to recommend picks on whether run(s) will be scored in the opening frame of a given MLB game. Thanks to a lifelong love of fantasy football and his previous career as an MMA fighter, Billy also bets on the NFL and UFC, with a special interest in daily fantasy for all three sports.
Billy had stops at Stokastic and the 33rd Team in-between his stint as an MMA fighter and now at Action.
Nick Giffen is a predictive analyst who pioneered Action’s NFL Luck Rankings, specializing in NASCAR and college basketball player props in addition to professional football. Nick’s models also power Action’s popular live streams during NFL primetime games, Bet What Happens Live.
Nick has his PhD in Mathematics from North Carolina State University and worked as a data analyst in the biotech industry before becoming a co-owner of the fantasy site RotoViz then later joining Action in 2022.
Brett McMurphy is a college football insider and long-time voter in the AP Top 25 Poll as well as on the Heisman Trophy. Brett leverages his unique purview as a journalist to “lift the veil” on college football for BBOC audiences, complementing the expert betting insights of his co-hosts with his insider perspective.
Prior to Action, Brett lent his insights to ESPN, CBS Sports, The New York Times, and more. He was awarded Beat Writer of the Year by the Football Writers Association of America in 2019.
Michael Calabrese is known for an unmatched depth and breadth of expertise on Group of Five college football, anchoring the associated content on BBOC feeds. Michael also specializes in college basketball and NFL betting, contributing content across Action platforms for each.
