How to Bet on Boxing

There are a few things you might mean when asking "how to bet on boxing."

  1. You need to know where/what sites you can bet at, which we covered
  2. You don't know how betting odds work
  3. You need tips and strategies to bet profitably

We'll cover 2 and 3 below.

How the Odds Work

Boxing odds work just like any other sport. At most U.S. sportsbooks, the odds will default to "American odds" — which are centered around risking or winning $100. A minus sign (like -200) means that bet is the favorite and you have to risk more money than you'll win; a plus sign (like +160) means you'll win more than you risked. In all cases, you'll also get the money back that you risked if your bet is successful.

Let's use Crawford at -155 as an example. For every $1.55 you risk, you'll win $1, and get your $1.55 back. Sportsbooks do the math for you, or you can use our odds calculator to figure out your payout. If you're betting $155, you'll win $100. If you bet $15.50, you'll win $10. If you bet $20, you'll win $12.90.

Spence on the other hand is the underdog, so if you're betting him at +135, you'll win more than you risked. A $100 bet wins $135, plus your $100 back if he wins. A $10 bet wins $13.50. A $20 bet wins $27.

Boxing Tips & Strategies

In basically all other sports, there are a lot of predictive stats that bettors can use to gain an edge. Boxing is a little different. There are important data points to know — but for the most part, handicapping the “sweet science” comes down to a lot of anecdotal, subjective analysis.

That being said, there is data that handicappers should pay attention to:

The most trusted and well-known boxing statistics company is CompuBox, which provides real-time statistical data for boxing matches

  • Punches thrown/landed
  • Jabs per round
  • Power punches per round

These three stats seem pretty simple — and they are — but are they’re also very important toward determining the winner of a fight, especially if it reaches the judges table.

If you are the busier fighter, you have a better chance of — at the very least — looking like you are winning the fight. The same holds true if you are the fighter throwing — and landing — more power shots.
