Chelsea vs Real Madrid will kickoff at Stamford Bridge tomorrow for the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal. Madrid lead Chelsea 2-0 after they outplayed the Blues at the Santiago Bernabéu. Chelsea left back Ben Chilwell will have to sit out of tomorrow’s match after being shown a straight red card in the second half of the first leg.
Madrid sit as the second-favorite to win the CL at +470, while Chelsea are sixth at +3300. Madrid have a long history of finding success in the CL, leading all European clubs with a total of 14 CL titles while Chelsea have two.
Unfortunately for both teams, whoever advances to the semi-finals will most likely need to line up against Manchester City, who continue to bulldoze through European competition at the moment.
Let's dive into this second leg between Chelsea and Real Madrid.
Real Madrid Possess Thrilling Attack
Real Madrid excels as an attacking team. Vinicius Junior, Karim Benzem and Rodrygo are quick, dynamic and lethal in and around the box. With central midfielders Federico Valverde, Toni Kroos, and Luka Modric feeding the three attackers, Madrid were breaking down the Chelsea defense throughout the 90 minutes of play. Los Blancos successfully put away two goals, but they produced several more chances in and around the six-yard box.
While Madrid have looked threatening when attacking, their defense – especially in transition – looked poor against Chelsea. On two occasions Madrid were bailed out by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who made impressive saves on Felix’s one-on-one chance in the 18-yard box and Raheem Sterling's shot from within the six-yard box.
Chelsea Showing Positive Signs
Although Chelsea suffered a 2-0 defeat against Madrid, the Blues showed a lot of promising bright spots throughout the match. Several times they got in behind the Madrid defense and created solid chances on goal. In just the second minute of the match, Joao Felix was one on one with the keeper, but he failed to slot it away.
As Chelsea head back to their home field down 2-0 on aggregate, I expect them to attack a little more aggressively. In the first leg they played a bit more compact to try and contain Madrid’s attack, but I expect their play to be a bit more opened up in the second leg. Without Ben Chilwell at left back they may be more vulnerable defensively, but Chelsea will need to take attacking risks if they want to compete for a spot in the semifinal.
Real Madrid vs Chelsea Pick
I expect both teams to produce goals in this match. It really felt like Chelsea should have claimed a goal in the first leg and they should be able to find the back of the net if they’re taking attacking risks to close the 2-0 aggregate and while playing in their home stadium.
If Chelsea do take attacking risks by sending more numbers forward, Real Madrid have the ability to punish them on the counter, especially without Chilwell in the Blues’ backline. Madrid haven’t been shut out in their last eight matches, and with Chelsea thinking attack-minded for the second leg they should produce many dangerous chances this match.
We saw a similar narrative unfold when Chelsea faced Dortmund in the round of 16. In the first leg, they played in Dortmund and Chelsea produced chances but failed to put one in the back of the net, falling 1-0 in aggregate. When the teams returned to Stamford Bridge, the Blues attacked relentlessly and managed to string together two goals.
If Chelsea throw those numbers forward against Madrid in this second leg, this game has the potential to break open. That could mean a lot of scoring chances.
