Real Madrid Prediction
LosBlancos are far from their usual dominant self in European football. Sitting 16th in the new-fangled Champions League "Swiss-system" table, they're holding on to a seated spot by the skin of their teeth.
However, don't ever underestimate the heart of champion. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti's side is nothing if not a serial winner. Last Wednesday, they put five past Red Bull Salzburg to stave elimination rumors out of the water. They followed that act with a 3-0 win over Real Valladolid in Saturday's La Liga to stay four points clear of Atletico Madrid at the top of the Spanish league.
They'll be without star man Vinicius Jr. (suspension), Dani Carvajal (knee), Eder Militao (ACL) and Eduardo Camavinga (hamstring), but still have plenty of firepower. A top-eight finish is a difficult task, but this clash is a must-win game for Real Madrid as a loss could see them drop out of the playoff seedings.
Brest Prediction
Eric Roy's men have been the Cinderella story of the competition. They've followed up an impressive 2023-24 season with an even more impressive showing at the Champions League.
Sitting 13th just on goal difference, they've guaranteed themselves a spot in the next phase and could even finish in the top eight. So far, they're undefeated at home, with wins against PSV (1-0), Sturm Graz (2-1) and a 1-1 tie against Bayer Leverkusen.
The Les Pirates are on a five-game winning streak at home and have scored 12 goals over those games.
Real Madrid vs. Brest Pick
The much-criticized new Champions League format has shown its strength in the past couple of games. Had this clash been the last game of a group stage between two already qualified teams, it perhaps wouldn't have drawn so much attention. However, as things stand, much is at stake.
Real Madrid already lost to Lille in a shocking defeat and the fact that Los Blancos have lost 50% of their road games versus French teams should not be ignored.
However, when you reach the business end of a competition, you'd be wise to never discount Real Madrid. Brest's home run won't count for much against the defending champions and I'd be genuinely shocked to see Madrid and Ancelotti lose the aura that has carried them to so much success. Kylian Mbappé has had a shaky start to life at the Spanish capital, but he's proven that he can score against French teams, and the Los Blancos will want to send a message that the king is still in the fight.
