Man City have completed the three-peat! They became the third team ever to maintain the Premier League crown in three consecutive seasons and have now won the league title in five of the last six seasons after Arsenal's 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forrest handed them the trophy.
While their match Sunday against Chelsea is now meaningless for both sides, it will be City's final match at Etihad Stadium this campaign, and they will lift the EPL trophy in front of their fans after the game.
Meanwhile, Chelsea's only celebration of the 2022-23 campaign will be when it comes to a close. Despite accumulating four points in their last two matches, they remain 11th in the league table and will not take part in any European competition next season for the first time since 2016/17.
Will Chelsea put a slight damper on their big six rival's celebration and earn Lampard his third consecutive result as the Blues interim manager, or will Man City continue their dominance as they look to chase more history this season?
Man City Still Have Greater Goals Ahead
The Cityzens are coming off one of their biggest wins under the Pep Guardiola realm, defeating Real Madrid 4-0 in the second leg of their Champions League series to advance to the finals, where they will face Inter Milan on June 10th.
Now, having claimed their first silverware of the season in what could be the start of a possible treble — a feat that an English side has not achieved since Sir Alex Ferguson's Man United team in 1998-99 — Man City will likely rotate a majority of their squad.
However, Man City's bench is better than many first-division teams' starting 11. It is a big reason why they have been able to dominate this season while also participating in multiple outside competitions.
City have secured every possible point in their last 11 EPL games and have won every match inside the Etihad since the start of the new year. In that stretch, they have scored a nearly incomprehensible 56 goals while allowing only seven.
While it is fair to assume City are due for a bad result at some point in 2023, Guardiola's relentlessness for perfection will likely not let that happen with greater goals still ahead.
Chelsea Are Just Counting Down The Days
Unlike their competition, this Blues' season has been one to forget. Things have been so bad that a Chelsea team that holds six league titles of their own and are just two years removed from a Champions League crown main goal in the second half of the competition was to avoid relegation.
They have fired two coaches in this season and spent a record-breaking amount of money in the winter transfer window, yet nothing has improved the team's results for American owner Todd Boehly in his first full season with the London side.
However, Chelsea are still one of the most talented teams on paper, and on their day they could be good enough to hang with the best of the best. It just seems that Lampard will not be able to get them motivated enough to complete such a task on Sunday, despite there not being another manager who is more credible to convince his players to play for the crest on the front of their chest.
Though the Blues have four points from their last two league matches, they have claimed just one victory in their last 11 tries and have already lost three times to Man City within the past year.
Man City vs Chelsea Pick
This match is no more than a chance for Man City to put on a show for their home fans in their final home game of the season before lifting the Premier League trophy.
I expect them to send out their stars in the first half and take an early lead for their fans before rotating heavily in the second half and coasting to their twelfth consecutive league victory. But as we know, their subs are just as likely to find the back of the net.
Chelsea players may try to put on a strong individual performance for their recently appointed manager for next season, Mauricio Pochettino. Still, the team chemistry is just not there this campaign.
There is no value in taking City's ML, so I will back the champions to score in both halves.
