In Week 9, Christian McCaffrey returned from a high ankle sprain to lead the Panthers’ near-upset of the Chiefs, but unfortunately, he did not make it out of the game unscathed. McCaffrey sustained a new shoulder injury toward the end of the game, making his outlook murky. Aaron Jones and Michael Thomas were also able to return from multi-week absences, with mixed results, while Ezekiel Elliott powered through a hamstring injury that clearly limited his effectiveness.
This week, we’ll be monitoring the statuses of Chris Carson (foot), Kenyan Drake (ankle) and Calvin Ridley (foot), all of whom were inactive in Week 10, and we’ll also track Nick Chubb’s status as he works his way back from a sprained MCL.
As always, be sure to check back throughout the week as this page is updated with the latest news.
Week 10 NFL Injury Report
Latest On NFL Injuries
Sunday Updates
Seahawks RB Chris Carson (foot): On Saturday, the Seahawks ruled Carson out for today’s matchup against the Rams after he was unable to get in any practice reps for the third week in a row. Backup RB Carlos Hyde (hamstring) was also ruled out, and the team has elevated RB Alex Collins from its practice squad for the second consecutive week to serve as depth at the position behind DeeJay Dallas and Travis Homer.
Cardinals RB Kenyan Drake (ankle): After a one-game absence, Drake has a “good chance to play” today against the Bills, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Drake is still not a lock to play and a final call on his status will be made after he has a chance to test out his ankle in pregame warm-ups.
Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy (shoulder): After playing 84% of team snaps during his Week 9 breakout breakout performance, Jeudy popped up on the Broncos injury report this week with a shoulder injury. The rookie missed Wednesday’s practice, but was able to get in limited sessions on both Thursday and Friday. Officially considered questionable to play, Jeudy is expected to be available against the Raiders, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Lions TE T.J. Hockenson (toe): Hockenson was a Thursday addition to the Lions’ injury report this week, missing practice that day after getting in a full session on Wednesday. While the mid-week downgrade is generally not a good sign, Hockenson was able to return to practice Friday as a limited participant. He’s expected to play through his “questionable” tag against Washington, according to Rapoport.
Friday Updates
Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (COVID-19 protocol): Big Ben was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 List earlier in the week after being identified as a close contact of TE Vance McDonald, who tested positive for the virus. Roethlisberger has tested negative throughout the week and the expectation is that he’ll be activated from the reserve list tomorrow. As long as there are no surprises in his next round of testing, expect Roethlisberger to be under center against Cincinnati this weekend.
Bengals RB Joe Mixon (foot): Mixon was called "doubtful” by head coach Zac Taylor today, and it’s looking like he’ll miss his third game in a row for the Bengals. Taylor continued to say: “If you know anything about this guy, he wants to play more than anything. Sometimes you have to protect him from himself.” For at least one more week, Gio Bernard will carry the backfield load for Cincinnati.
Lions WR Kenny Golladay (hip): Unsurprisingly, Golladay has been ruled out for Week 10 after missing practice each day for the second consecutive week. Golladay’s recovery timeline remains unclear, as does his Week 11 status. Detroit could also be without their starting tight end, T.J. Hockenson, who is currently considered questionable to play with a toe injury. In Week 9, Danny Amendola led the team in receiving in Golladay’s absence, racking up seven catches for 77 yards.
Texans RB David Johnson (concussion): Johnson remains in the concussion protocol and has been officially ruled out for the Texans’ Week 10 matchup against the Browns. Duke Johnson will operate as the lead back once again for Houston this weekend.
Cardinals RB Kenyan Drake (ankle): After sitting out Week 9, Drake is considered a gametime decision in Week 10. Drake was able to get in limited practice sessions each day this week, which is an improvement over last week, when he was unable to get on the practice field at all. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said of Drake today, “We want to make sure he feels good pregame and can do what he does best. If not, he won’t go.”
Thursday Updates
Because Mixon has been able to avoid landing on IR — which requires a three-week minimum absence — there’s been hope that he’ll be able to return to sooner than later, but unless he is able to practice on Friday, it’s difficult to envision Mixon playing in Week 10.
Eagles RB Miles Sanders (knee): The news is better for Sanders, who has also been out since injuring his knee in Week 6. On Wednesday, Sanders was able to participate in his first practice since sustaining his injury on Oct. 18, and today he was upgraded to a full practice participant. Barring a late week setback, expect Sanders to be on this field Sunday against the Giants.
Wednesday Updates
Browns QB Baker Mayfield (COVID-19 protocol): Mayfield was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 List last week after a close contact of his tested positive for COVID-19, though Mayfield himself never tested positive for the virus. On Wednesday, the Browns activated Baker from the reserve list, meaning he was free to rejoin the team in practice today. Expect Mayfield to lead the Browns offense against the Texans in Week 10.
Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey (shoulder): In his first game back after a high ankle sprain forced him to miss multiple games, CMC was forced out of the Panthers’ Week 9 loss late in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury. On Monday, head coach Matt Rhule called McCaffrey “day-to-day”, but today ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that CMC is seeking a second opinion on the injury.
McCaffrey is a near lock to miss Week 10 and his long-term status will depend on his diagnosis. Mike Davis will once again fill in as the starting running back for Carolina this weekend.
Colts WR T.Y. Hilton (groin): Hilton does not carry a game status designation heading into Thursday night and he’s expected to make his return to the lineup after missing Week 9 with a groin injury. The Colts listed Hilton as a full practice participant throughout the week, though it should be noted that Indianapolis has held walkthroughs this week rather than formal practices due to the short turnaround after playing on Sunday.
Tuesday Updates
Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (COVID-19 protocol): On Monday, the Steelers placed TE Vance McDonald on the Reserve/COVID-19 List after he tested positive for the virus. Today, Roethlisberger was among a small group of players the team identified as close contacts of McDonald, and, as a result, he was also placed on the reserve list.
Similar to Matthew Stafford last week, Big Ben will be available to play in Week 10 as long as he continues to test negative for the virus throughout the week. Roethlisberger also sustained a minor knee injury in Week 9, but he was able to play through it.
Monday Updates
Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey (shoulder): After missing six games due to a high ankle sprain, McCaffrey returned to action in Week 9, racking up 151 total yards with two touchdowns. Unfortunately, he suffered a shoulder injury on the final drive of the Panthers' loss to the Chiefs that puts his Week 10 status in doubt. Head coach Matt Rhule called CMC “day to day” on Monday, adding that he would have more information on Wednesday when the team resumes practice.
Bears RB David Montgomery (concussion): Montgomery has entered the concussion protocol after being knocked out of Sunday's loss to the Titans. With Tarik Cohen (knee) already lost for the year, Chicago is very thin at running back, with Cordarrelle Patterson, Ryan Nall, and Artavis Pierce filling out the depth behind Montgomery on the active roster. If Montgomery is unable to clear the concussion protocol by Sunday, the team would likely elevate Lamar Miller from its practice squad and utilize a committee approach in the backfield.
Texans RB David Johnson (concussion): Johnson finds himself in a similar position to Montgomery after he sustained a concussion early in the first quarter on Sunday. After Johnson left the game, Duke Johnson operated as the Texans' workhorse out of the backfield, carrying the ball 16 times for 41 yards and a touchdown. The only other Houston player to record a rushing attempt was quarterback Deshaun Watson. Expect Duke to carry a similarly heavy workload in Week 10 against the Browns if David is inactive.
Browns RB Nick Chubb (knee): Speaking of the Browns, it looks like Chubb has a chance to return in Week 10 after the team designated him for return from the injured reserve on Monday. That gives Cleveland 21 days to activate Chubb to the active roster, and he was back at practice on Monday. Because Chubb is not yet on the active roster, Cleveland is not required to report on his practice participation. He should be considered questionable for now until more is known about his Week 10 status.
Washington QB Kyle Allen (ankle): Allen was carted off the field after suffering a gruesome ankle injury early in the first half against the Giants. Today, it was announced that Allen will miss the remainder of the season with a dislocated ankle. After Allen left the game, Alex Smith filled in under center for Washington, throwing for 325 yards and a touchdown, but he was also picked off three times. Smith should be considered the favorite to start moving forward, but Dwayne Haskins — who was inactive yesterday — could also factor into the equation.
