A massive underdog has finally won the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest.
Patrick Bertoletti has won the 2024 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest with 58 hot dogs and buns on Thursday afternoon. Bertoletti had been a +900 underdog prior to the contest, meaning a $100 wager would have netted $900.
Contest favorite Geoffrey Esper closed at -130 odds and finished in second with 53 hot dogs and buns. Nick Wehry at +1500 prematch odds came in third.
Bertoletti is the longest champion in recorded history after a decade and a half of supremacy at the hands of Joey Chestnut — who won 16 out of the last 17 contests, often as short of a favorite as -4000 odds. But without Chestnut this year, this year's contest was wide open. The greatest of all-time could not compete in the 2024 contest due a dispute with event organizers.
Chestnut elected to maintain a sponsorship with Impossible Foods — a direct competitor of Nathan's that makes vegan goods — instead of dropping the partnership in order to compete.
