Apple has launched a new sports app that will feature live betting odds, the company announced on Wednesday.
The app is available to download in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada and will currently target all the major sports in session. That includes the Champions League, the NBA, the NHL, the Premier League, college basketball, La Liga and the Bundesliga.
Live betting odds will be featured by clicking into a particular game. Matches that are eligible to be streamed will also be available.
The foray is a new frontier for the company, which has never entered the realm of sports betting in its lengthy history.
Data on the MLB, NFL and college football will be available when those seasons began.
Apple has streaming rights to the MLB in addition to the MLS. While this app figures to rival ESPN due to its accessibility — new phones figure to have this app automatically downloaded — there's a massive barrier to entry for sports fans who are used to the ESPN app as their one-stop shop for sports scores.
ESPN also has the distinct advantage of streaming rights across a far wider array of sports. ESPN+ features nearly every single college basketball, La Liga, Bundesliga and hockey game imaginable, in addition to many nationally televised NFL and NBA games.
