In the first official golf tournament of the PGA TOUR season, the betting public is looking toward a player with familiarity and a legend to fill their wallets this week.

Patrick Reed is a former winner of the Sentry Tournament of Champions, plus he has a runner-up finish. The narrative is he cares more than his competition, has been working throughout the offseason and will be ready to go from the jump. Therefore, it's no surprise Reed is the most popular bet.

According to data released by BetMGM on Wednesday, Reed has taken the most bets and most dollars wagered on the tournament to win outright.

Reed hasn't won since 2015, but he was second in 2020 in a playoff with Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele following a lousy final round. Judging current form is difficult with the time off, but Reed did finish third in his last start at Hero World Challenge in December.

Joining Reed as a popular bet is reigning PGA champion Phil Mickelson.

Mickelson, a 100-1 longshot, has racked up the 11th-most bets of the week, making him the third-highest liability for the sportsbook.

Mickelson's long odds make him a liability, but other golfers are more popular to bet on. That includes Schauffele, who has taken the second-most bets and money of the tournament to Reed.

However, it's Tony Finau who's the second-biggest liability.

Finau broke through in 2021 with a victory at The Northern Trust, his first PGA TOUR win since 2016. With that win behind him, 2022 could be the year he thrives. Only Reed and Schauffele have been bet more than Finau this week.
