September has been one ridiculous month for sports bettors, and it's about to get even crazier. The 2020 U.S. Open tees off on Thursday at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, New York, and we've already seen some heavy action.
A bettor at William Hill plunked down $45,000 on Phil Mickelson to win the tournament at 75-1 odds ($10 bet wins $750, also written as +7500). If Lefty comes through, that bettor stands to net $3,375,000.
Mickelson didn't miss the chance to tip his hat to the punter:
Heard someone place 45k on me to win the open at 75-1 (pays 3.3 mil)
Hoping for both of us I have a 3 shot lead on 18 tee.— Phil Mickelson (@PhilMickelson) September 12, 2020
A few months ago, it was hard to fathom Dustin Johnson sitting at the top of the oddsboard for the U.S. Open. Johnson struggled through 2019 and was out of form before the hiatus, but the World No. 1 has been so dominant since the pause that it would now be hard to imagine anybody else going off as the favorite for 2020's second Major Championship.
DJ is +850 ($10 bet wins $85) to win the 2020 U.S. Open. He is the only golfer in the field with single-digit odds. Johnson has three wins, two runner-ups and seven top-20 finishes in 10 his last 10 appearances.
Jon Rahm, who won the BMW Championship three weeks ago, is the second choice at +1000. Rahm won two tournaments and collected five top-15 finishes in his last six starts. His form has perhaps never been better heading into a Major Championship.
Justin Thomas (+1400), Xander Schauffele (+1600) and Rory McIlroy (+1800) round out the top five.
Collin Morikawa (+2000) figures to be a popular pick across betting and DFS this week. Even though his odds have plummeted from where they were a few months ago, Morikawa has rewarded speculators time and again, including with his win at the PGA Championship.
There's a bit of a gap between Morikawa and the next tier of players, which is headlined by Bryson DeChambeau at +2800.
At the beginning of the hiatus, it felt like a foregone conclusion that DeChambeau would be one of the favorites for every major on the 2020 calendar. Things change quickly in golf betting. DeChambeau has been inconsistent over the past few months and now finds himself on the outside looking in as far as the favorites are concerned.
After DeChambeau and Webb Simpson (+2800), things start to get bunched. There are 10 golfers sitting between +3300 and +4500:
- Daniel Berger +3300
- Patrick Reed +3300
- Patrick Cantlay +3500
- Tony Finau +4000
- Tommy Fleetwood +4000
- Tyrrell Hatton +4000
- Hideki Matsuyama +4500
- Jason Day +4500
- Justin Rose +4500
- Tiger Woods +4500
As usual, the sportsbooks will be prepared to take a flood of money on Tiger Woods, especially at +4500. Daniel Berger could also be a popular play in this range given his remarkable consistency in 2020.
Patrick Cantlay is an interesting case in this range. Cantlay was near the top of the board when he returned to action at Muirfield Village but has not put his game completely together since the pause. Cantlay could be an under-the-radar investment in betting and DFS.
Another player who typically sneaks under the radar, but for a different reason, is Patrick Reed (+3300). Reed typically goes off at deeper odds in these types of fields and still doesn't garner much betting support, so his number could drift as we get closer to Thursday.
Betting takes some serious self-control, and there's no place you need to rely on that discipline more than when going through the mid-tier of the oddsboard at a Major Championship. There are some heavy hitters in the next range including Adam Scott (+5500), Viktor Hovland (+6000) and defending champion Gary Woodland (+10000).

There are plenty of other intriguing players in this range, like Sungjae Im (+8000), who looked like he may have found his stride after a funky run of form during the summer. Joining Im at 80-1 is Matthew Wolff, who wasn't far off Morikawa at the PGA Championship.
Who would have thought that Harris English (+7000) would have better odds to win the 2020 U.S. Open than Woodland, Abraham Ancer (+10000) and Jordan Spieth (+11000)?
Some other notable longshots include: Bubba Watson (+11000), Matt Kuchar (+15000), Henrik Stenson (+16000) and Marc Leishman (+22500).
