After a thrilling major that featured an elite leaderboard, things will slow down a bit for the 2020 Wyndham Championship as most of the world's best players are taking the week off in preparation for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, which begin Aug. 20 at the Northern Trust.
Even though a casual fan may not be as intrigued by the odds for the Wyndham Championship, experienced golf bettors know that these type of fields often bring the best value, especially further down the board. J.T. Poston won this tournament at 100-1 in 2019 and it wouldn't be a shock to see another winner come from that range again in 2020.
But it also wouldn't be a surprise to see tournament-favorite Webb Simpson (+1000) win, either. Simpson has 11 career starts at this event, and owns top-five finishes in five of ‘em, including each of the last three years, as he’s gone 2nd-2nd-3rd during that time.
The top of the board is a bit crowded as Simpson is followed by Brooks Koepka (+1100), Patrick Reed (+1500), Paul Casey (+1500), Tommy Fleetwood (+1800) and Justin Rose (+2500), each of whom made some noise at Harding Park at some point last weekend.
Koepka is certainly a price to watch as he struggled in the final round at Harding Park, playing himself out of contention with a 4-over on Sunday. It's hard to imagine bettors backing Koepka at this type of odds after that performance. Recency bias is a real factor in betting.
The same logic can be applied to Fleetwood, who doomed himself with a 3-over showing on Sunday in San Francisco.
After Rose there is a bit of a drop-off in star-power, with Harris English (+2500) bridging the gap between the top of the board and the mid-tier. The most notable player in this range is the mercurial Jordan Spieth (+3300), who went 73-68-76-67 at Harding Park. Your guess is as good as mine on Spieth, but it's a tempting number in this field.
Brendon Todd (+3300) has made a habit of popping up on the leaderboard lately and oddsmakers have taken notice (that is their job, after all). The suddenly-consistent Si Woo Kim (+3300) has also seen his price plummet. Kim has been way down the board for some time now but is now being offered at the same odds as Spieth, Billy Horschel and another South Korean in Sungjae Im.
A couple of months ago you'd jump all over Iron Man Im at 33-1 in this field but he is really fighting it lately and probably won't garner much betting support, even at this price.
