The 2021 U.S. Open odds board lists Jon Rahm, who was well on his way to running away with the Memorial in a tough field before testing positive for COVID-19, as the favorite this weekend at Torrey Pines.
Rahm opened this week as the favorite at DraftKings at +1000, a clear separation from a crowded, top-heavy board with Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson and Xander Schauffele following him at +1400 each.
With a six-stroke lead entering the final round of the Memorial, Rahm was told he tested positive for COVID-19 and was forced to withdraw just 18 holes short of what looked like his sixth career PGA TOUR win. His last victory game in the 2020 BMW Championship in a playoff over Johnson.
Rahm, the No. 3 player in the world, is still looking for his first major championship with his best finish being a T3 at the 2019 U.S. Open.
Brooks Koepka and Jordan Spieth are both +1800 and have ceilings as high as anyone on TOUR. Koepka earned a 'big-game hunter' reputation for his performances in major tournaments, but he's had an inconsistent stretch while battling a knee injury.
He won the Phoenix Open in February, finished second in a WGC event to end February, missed the cut at the Masters and Byron Nelson then failed to chase down Phil Mickelson in the final round of the PGA Championship. He missed the cut at last week's Palmetto Championship. Half of his eight PGA TOUR wins are in majors, including back-to-back U.S. Open wins in 2017 and 2018.
Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau and Rory McIlroy all come in at +2000, with Patrick Reed and Justin Thomas at +2200.
Collin Morikawa (+2500) and Viktor Hovland (+2800) round out the options at better than +3000.
The "middle" of the board will surely draw some betting attention given the juicer prices, with Masters runner-up Will Zalatoris (+4500), Webb Simpson (+5500), and Torrey Pines wizard Marc Leishman (+8000) all in the mix.
There are some names further down the board who may not be well known to U.S. golf fans, including last week's winner Garrick Higgo at 70-1. The South African won the Palmetto Championship in just his second career PGA TOUR start.
