Rory McIlroy claimed his 23rd TOUR victory over the weekend in the Palmetto State as he successfully defended his CJ CUP title. McIlroy also took his spot back at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings with the win, which has some added symbolism this time around as he leads the PGA TOUR into this new era.
It was certainly a high-water mark of the Fall Swing as McIlroy and Jon Rahm battled it out alongside some of the other top players in the world over the weekend. Unfortunately, as is often the case, we go from one big field to one where 48th-ranked Seamus Power is the top ranked player in the field this week.
It'll certainly be a switch for us as fans, but for the players, this one has a lot of meaning. There is still a chance for a long-term exemption and entry into The Masters and other top events with a win on the line. So while it may not be as exciting to us, this is still a potential life-changing opportunity for the players teeing it up this week.
There is a good chance we see a few players at long odds near the top this weekend, and I think it is an event where you can comfortably throw around some darts in the triple-digit range. We may even struggle to find much in the way of form for many of these guys, so I'll be looking to bet on overall talent and potentially some coastal golf course fit.
Best Bets
Robby Shelton +4000 (DraftKings)
This first bet is purely on the talent and rise of Robby Shelton. Not long after starting his Korn Ferry Tour season in 2022 with five straight missed cuts, Shelton dipped all the way down to 638th in the world. His game was clearly struggling at the time, but there was a clear turn in his play after that stretch which led to four top-10 finishes, including two wins and a runner-up.
Shelton has carried that into his promotion on the PGA TOUR, where he has made the cut in all three events he's played and has two top-25 finishes. He won't be hindered by his lack of distance this week as his ability to find the fairway will be rewarded more on this course than many stateside. I'll lean on that skillset and his recent winning pedigree to start my card this week in Bermuda.
Kevin Yu +8000 (DraftKings)
It seems I may go with a bit of a Korn Ferry Tour graduate theme this week as Kevin Yu is the second such player on my card. Yu finished in the top 25 last year on the KFT to earn his promotion, but he also stepped up in a similar PGA TOUR event in the spring when he finished T7 at the Puerto Rico Open.
He has since made the cut in all three of his PGA TOUR appearances this fall, with a top 20 coming at Shriners, and in all three tournaments he gained at least four shots on the field with his ball striking. If he can find something on the greens this week in Bermuda, he certainly has the talent to compete at this level. At +8000, we are getting solid value to take that shot.
Kramer Hickok +10000 (DraftKings)
My dart throw of the week is on Kramer Hickok. He hasn't been great on the course over the past season, but one place he always seems to show up is in Bermuda. He has never finished worse than 30th in three trips to this tournament.
Hickok seems to find a top result for himself this time of year as he seemingly came out of nowhere to finish fourth at the Houston Open last fall, and his eighth-place finish in this event in 2020 was also off of some poor results. I'll hope that the Texas alum gets some good feels coming to a place he's had success in the past and can put himself in position to have a chance over the weekend at long odds.
