The finish on Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship was nothing short of spectacular. Will Zalatoris and Sepp Straka went toe to toe across three playoff holes to decide a winner. It wasn't the best golf of the week, but it was certainly full of drama. Ultimately, Zalatoris closed out his first win on TOUR with a bogey on the par-3 11th after both players were forced to drop from the penalty area to the right of the green.
Zalatoris moves into the top spot of the FedEx Cup Rankings as the top 70 players head to Wilmington, Del., for the second playoff event, the BMW Championship. Wilmington Country Club will be the host course and it will be its first time hosting a PGA tournament.
We will have to take a look and analyze things on the fly without concrete data to figure out the players who will fit. The only correlation I see on the surface is that this 7,534-yard par-71 is only matched by those standard at Quail Hollow. Certainly it seems that length will be a factor and, as always, I'll be looking for some good form heading into the odds drop on Monday morning.
BMW Championship Picks
Jon Rahm
Looking at the distance of this track — along with the fairway bunkering and rough length — I am going to try to target some guys who have a combination of length and accuracy off the tee.
Jon Rahm has always been that type of driver of the golf ball, and he seems to be finding some form late in the season. He posted four rounds in the 60s at the FedEx St Jude Championship and ranked third in the field in SG: Tee-to-Green.
Rahm was around +2000 going into Memphis and if we can get something around that number again this week at any book, I'll be really interested to jump in on the former No. 1 player in the world.
Tony Finau
Even with the win from Zalatoris, the hottest player in the world continues to be Tony Finau. He came in off of back-to-back victories and added a T5 in Memphis, where he was right around the leaders throughout the week. Finau also posted four rounds under par at TPC Southwind and I'll be looking to ride that hot form into Delaware.
Finau is another player who long off the tee and accurate when at his best, which I think can set him up for another week in contention. He continues to be in that tier in the mid-20s in odds and that is looking like a number that will get my interest to start the week.
Aaron Wise
If I am looking for a longer shot player to contend in Wilmington, I'll start my list with Aaron Wise. He ranked 13th on approach last week in Memphis and was solid in both aspects of his ball striking.
We know Wise is a complete player tee to green, ranking 53rd or better in each of those metrics this year. It continues to come down to the putter for Wise and those are the types of guys I am willing to take shots on at longer numbers with the hope we catch him on a good putting week.
