Will Zalatoris has been on the brink of his first PGA TOUR victory multiple times, including last week's American Express. Is the 2022 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines the place where he'll earn his first win?
Zalatoris is tied for 12th on the oddsboard at BetMGM with +3300 odds, but he's the most popular bet at the sportsbook. No other golfer has taken as many bets to win the tournament outright than Zalatoris.
The 25-year-old already is coming off a T6 finish last week, thanks in large part to a second round score of 61. He finished in the top 10 at eight different tournaments last season, including a T6 at the U.S. Open and a solo second at the Masters. He was T7 at this tournament last season.
Yet, that first win has proven elusive.
The action on Zalatoris makes him the sportsbook's second-biggest liability of the week.
The worst outcome would be a Tony Finau win. Finau, whose odds have shortened to +2500 from +3300, has taken the second-most bets and third-most dollars to win the tournament. That's not surprising considering the course history. In seven starts at this tournament, he's finished second, sixth, 13th, sixth, fourth, 18th and 24th.
While there are some surprises in the betting market, Jon Rahm being popular is not one of them.
More than one-fifth of the total dollars risked on the outright market are on Rahm at his short +700 number. He's the third-most bet golfer, but because his odds are so short, he's not one of the top liabilities.
The longshot bettors are taking their chance on is Jason Day (+6600). With the second-biggest handle of the week, Day represents the third-biggest liability for BetMGM.
Day finished T49 at The American Express, showing flashes of the player he once was. Sportsbooks prefer his next win happens a different week.
