A stacked field makes its way to Southern California for the Farmers Insurance Open this weekend at Torrey Pines.
Six of the world’s top-10 players and 12 of the top 20 will be in La Jolla this week for the Farmers, which like The American Express will feature multiple courses.
Defending champion Patrick Reed, who won by five strokes while creating controversy along the way, is back in the field, but his layoff and lack of results of late means he isn't near the top of the odds board.
Jon Rahm is favored, as he is in most tournaments he enters. It helps that he claimed his first major at Torrey Pines last year at the U.S. Open and won this tournament back in 2017.
Behind him are a bevy of top players, including Dustin Johnson (world No. 3) in his 2022 debut. DJ wasn’t active in the fall season, so this will be the first we’ll see of the 2020 Masters champion this season.
Justin Thomas (world No. 5), San Diego native Xander Schauffele (No. 6) and Bryson DeChambeau (No. 9) return to action, as does Sony Open champion and FedEx Cup points leader Hideki Matsuyama (No. 10).
Other top-20 players include Sam Burns (No. 13), Scottie Scheffler (No. 14), Jordan Spieth (No. 15), Brooks Koepka (No. 18) and Daniel Berger (No. 19).
Format
The format of the Farmers is unique, featuring multiple courses like last week's American Express.
Players will play one of the first two rounds on the North Course at Torrey Pines and the other on the South. The third and fourth rounds will be played exclusively on the South, which is the track that last summer's U.S. Open was played on.
Past Winners
Tiger Woods historically loved this tournament, winning it a staggering seven times from 1999-2013.
Jason Day and Brandt Snedeker aren’t that prolific, but each has won twice at the Farmers. You could say that Rahm has, as well. Justin Rose and Marc Leishman won in 2019 and ’20 before Reed’s win last year.
Rose won at 21-under par, but usually the winning score is much lower. Reed was at 14-under and Leishman 15. Day in 2018 won at 10-under.
Early Pick
Shane McNichol:Brooks Koepka (+3300)
We are treated to the best field of the young 2022 FedEx Cup season. A large majority of the world's best will be in play, all chasing Rahm. who is the favorite any week he tees it up but is even more likely to win at Torrey Pines. He has finished in the top five in three of the last five years at this event, including a three-shot win in 2017, and he won the US Open here in last summer.
Rahm's odds are a tad too short to attract my pick here, though. Further down the board, my eye is drawn to Brooks Koepka at +3300.
Koepka always played well at Torrey Pines, gaining +1.47 strokes per round on the field, which is eighth among this week's field at this course. Koepka was not in form last year at this event, missing the cut while nursing the knee injury that would lead him to surgery. When he returned to Torrey for the US Open, Brooks played great, tying for fourth place.
With the 15th best odds in the field, Koepka is the pick.
