We're down to the final three events of the 2021-22 PGA TOUR season, and only those in top form will play all of them.
The top 125 in the FedEx Cup regular-season standings will be in Memphis, Tenn., this week for the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship.
TPC Southwind has been a regular stop on the TOUR calendar for many, many years. It became a WGC event in 2019, taking the place of the Bridgestone Invitational on the TOUR calendar
Only two former winners of this tournament will be in the field this week: Daniel Berger, who went back-to-back here in 2016-17, and Justin Thomas.
Scottie Scheffler enters the playoffs with a big lead in the points standings, more than 1,200 ahead of Cameron Smith. Regular PGA TOUR events offer 500 points to the winner, but the St. Jude and next week’s BMW Championship will have 2,000 go to the winner. For reference, Scheffler has 3,556 points and only six players eclipsed 2,000 for the season.
Scheffler is high on the odds board this week, but Rory McIlroy sits atop it. In the Northern Irishman’s last eight stroke-play starts, he has six top-10 finishes and one win. He has finished in the top 20 in all eight of those events.
The reigning FedEx Cup winner, Patrick Cantlay, starts the playoffs in fifth place, almost 1,500 points behind Scheffler. Last year, Cantlay won the second playoff event, which gave him a big advantage entering the 30-man Tour Championship, enabling him to win the $15 million prize.
Wyndham Championship winner Joohyung "Tom" Kim opens the St. Jude at 40-1 following his impressive win in Greensboro on Sunday.
The Course
TPC Southwind is a par-70 that measures just shy of 7,250 yards. There are bunkers all over the course, as well, as 10 water hazards, so avoiding trouble will play a big factor this week.
As usually is the case on the PGA TOUR, approach play will be the most important facet of players’ games this week. The greens at Southwind are Bermuda grass.
As Matt Vincenzi laid out in his preview last year, TPC Southwind’s greens tend to be tougher to hit than the usual stop on TOUR. Entering last year, the percentage of greens in regulation hit in this tournament was about 59%, compared to a then-65% TOUR average.
Two of the last three editions of this tournament have seen a winning score of 16-under. Those came from Abraham Ancer and Brooks Koepka in 2019, while Justin Thomas won in 2020 at 13-under.
Usually, the winning score is in the teens here. Dustin Johnson won at 19-under in 2018, but only three times has the victor gone 20-under or lower at this tournament. The last time was David Toms’ first of back-to-back wins in 2003, which he won right at 20-under.
Past Winners
Ancer and Thomas winning the last two St. Judes is evidence that ball-strikers will tend to thrive here, although Koepka and Johnson, who has two wins at Southwind, have given bombers hope.
Berger, like Johnson, has his two wins here and would also fit the “ball-striker” profile.
Harris English is the only other player who has won the St. Jude who is still active on TOUR, although he missed most of the 2022 portion of the season because of injury and did not qualify for the playoffs.
