The final ticket for the 2022 Masters was punched by an unlikely winner in J.J. Spaun, who captured his first win on TOUR after 147 career starts at the Valero Texas Open. He'll have little time to celebrate, as an unexpected trip to Augusta National will follow next week for the San Diego State grad. His final-round 69 secured a two-shot win over Matt Jones and Matt Kuchar.
Now, the best golfers in the world get set to convene for a tradition unlike any other. The 86th Masters will be held this week in Augusta. It will be full of storylines with the improbable return of Tiger Woods still a possibility.
Woods isn't the only player with injury questions, though, as defending champion Hideki Matsuyama has withdrawn from his last two tournaments with neck and back issues. Additionally, Bryson DeChambeau continues to fight hand and hip injuries.
Then, on the other end of the spectrum, Scottie Scheffler has ascended to the top of the world rankings with three wins in the early part of 2022. Cameron Smith has made his own charge to the top with two victories of his own, including the 2022 PLAYERS Championship.
While the world waits on news from Tiger, the game is in an overall position of strength with so much talent and parity, all of which will come together this week for the Masters.
Best Bets
Justin Thomas +1400 (PointsBet)
First off, let me tell you: I am not pulling the trigger on any bets until I give the odds a chance to reset on Monday morning. It may change my card altogether once we see where the numbers are adjusted, but one thing that is unlikely to change is my prediction for Justin Thomas as your 2022 Masters champion.
Thomas is a perfect fit for this course and everything that is needed for success. He has an elite game throughout his bag, most importantly on approach with his irons.
JT comes into the first major of the season with five top-eight finishes in the new year, including a third just a few weeks ago at the Valspar Championship. Everything is lining up for Thomas to come into the week ready to make a charge for the green jacket and I'm in at +1400, though I think there could be a little better out there before they send it on Thursday morning.
Jordan Spieth +2000 (PointsBet)
I'm going back to the well here with Jordan Spieth. The result last week at the Valero Texas Open was disappointing, but the underlying numbers are too much to ignore going into a course that he has flatly dominated at his best.
Spieth gained more than 8.5 shots on the field at TPC San Antonio with his ball striking, which is a remarkable number and positive sign for a player that has struggled at times in that category. He was absolutely dialed in on approach, gaining more than six shots on the field. Unfortunately, the putter let him down last week, but I simply don't worry about the short game with Spieth as he can find it in a big way, in a hurry.
That said, I don't love the odds and I think there is a sour sentiment around him coming into Masters week. He's one who I think bettors could get a better number before Round 1.
Update: As of Monday morning Spieth is 30-1 at DraftKings.
Max Homa +10000 (BetMGM)
Homa has been one of my go-to players early this year and he has always been right there in contention even without a win in 2022.
Homa has four consecutive top-17 finishes to his name and gained better than four shots on every field in each of those events. He's been even better than that across the last two stroke-play events, during which he gained 7.9 shots at the Arnold Palmer and 8.7 at THE PLAYERS. His putter is the only thing that has held him back from better results.
This week, Homa gets to make his second appearance at Augusta National following a missed cut in his debut. We know that experience is king around this track and he gets a natural bump just with it being his second trip. He's an elite par-5 scorer and proven tour winner, coming in with great form, which is all you can ask for at +8000 odds.
