There is no golf week on the calendar that provides more anticipation and excitement than the Masters.
It is truly "A Tradition Unlike Any Other" as the entire sports world will be focused on Augusta National Golf Club. The eyes are even wider this year with the potentially unexpected return of Tiger Woods looking increasingly likely.
The Masters will be seen through an even greater prism this year as the legalization of sports betting has developed a keen eye for golf. I'm certainly biased, but it is one of the best sports to bet, with so many different markets to get skin in the game.
There are some key ways to be sure you get the best edge available in golf betting, and that will be the focus in this article.
Shop for Odds
I understand that many bettors might be doing this casually, popping in to check out golf for the week, but I can tell you that there is nothing more important in golf betting than odds shopping.
Very few other sports compare to golf, as you will find different books taking varying stands on golfers for all tournaments.
The difference can be huge in golf as it is not uncommon for a player to be listed at +2500 at one book and +4000 at another, for example. In this case, that $10 bet you wanted to make just went from a payout of $250 to $400 just because you were able to shop around for the best number.
No matter what you do, or how you play this week, just be willing to look around a bit to get the best odds.
Monday Morning Odds Reset
There are always futures markets for the biggest golf events, with odds set well in advance of all of the major championships. Frequently, they aren't indicative of the market to start the week of the tournament.
We saw a reset in the odds for this year's Masters on Monday morning. I had a list of players I was looking to buy then.
The best time to buy in on a player to win any golf tournament is almost always at the very start of the week when many are releasing their odds without a true feel for the market.
Grab some coffee and be ready to shop for your guys when odds are released on Monday, and keep this in mind for major championships moving forward.
Look for Weather Advantages
As the week wears on and tee times are released, there are often weather factors that come about, which can help or hurt players with certain tee times.
THE PLAYERS Championship last month was a perfect example of that. The golfers in the late Thursday, early Friday wave found themselves in the worst of the weather heading into the cut. That left a large percentage of the other wave not only with tee times in the later rounds, but also with an edge to the top of the leaderboard.
Many weeks, there is no edge to be found, but you certainly don't want to miss it and find yourself on the wrong side of the draw. If you're looking to make some last-minute wagers, be sure to check the weather forecast.
Adjust Live or Between Rounds
The golf betting sweat is one of the best not only because of the storylines and potential for long odds wins, but also for the extended sweat across four days. There will be many twists and turns throughout any 72-hole tournament, especially at the Masters.
If you aren't exactly sure where you want to put your money to start the week and just want to see some golf before taking a stand, that is a perfectly fine strategy. There will be ample opportunities to bet, and sometimes you can take advantage of an overreaction to a bad hole, or even a bad round early in the week.
We see time and again where players start a week slow but find their way to the top by the end of the week. Breaks between rounds allow odds to reset and for you to get in on someone you think may be ready to win at three different stages of the event.
There is also a high likelihood that it will be competitive, with many players near the lead going into Sunday, creating another spot for good odds if you have a player you may peg to win.
Use Your Resources
We will have you covered here at Action Network across a bunch of different angles throughout the week. I will do my own reset of picks and plays after each round as we look for betting value going into the next day.
While the data is a bit limited for an event like the Masters, we will have the tools to put you in position to be successful throughout the tournament.
Be Disciplined
The hard reality of golf betting is that it is really, really difficult to pick a winner at any stage of any tournament. It's a ton of fun and the payoff is great, but you have to be disciplined with your bankroll.
The first thing with that is understanding that a really good handicapper is only hitting a winner once a month. They're also doing that with a limited card of players, not spreading their money across a ton of picks as that only dilutes your return on investment and makes it nearly impossible to be profitable long term.
Keeping your money management in check will help you to enjoy one of the best sports for betting, while also giving you a chance to do it again for the next tournament or major.
