We've seen weather play a factor with wind and rain in recent weeks on the PGA TOUR. Will the 2022 Masters be the same way?
As bettors finalize their outright cards and daily fantasy sports lineups, knowing what the weather forecast is critical. That's no different this week at the Masters, where rain and wind are expected.
When building cards and lineups on Wednesday, it makes Thursday and Friday the most important days. You're trying to get golfers to the weekend and take your chances from there. Knowing what Thursday is like helps for first-round leader bets, and finding any potential wave advantages can make a difference in lineups.
The early forecast could mean favorable scoring conditions to start the tournament.
"After some overnight storms late Wednesday and very early Thursday, we could have a soft course for golfers to take advantage of Thursday morning," RotoGrinders Chief Meteorologist Kevin Roth said. "Winds will also stay somewhat light through the morning on Thursday (around or under 10mph sustained for most of the morning), providing some of the best golfing weather of the tournament.
"By Thursday afternoon winds will pick up a bit with 15mph sustained winds, and that pattern will be repeated each day of the Masters, with the highest winds of the day coming in the afternoon on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday."
Afternoon wind is typical for golf tournaments, but the window to pay attention to is on Friday.
"The peak wind for the tournament is going to be Friday afternoon, with sustained winds around 20mph and gusts around 35mph," Roth said. "The Friday afternoon wave will be dealing with the worst of the weather. That's not to say you can fully avoid the wind, as even Thursday afternoon will be a bit gusty, but Friday will be the biggest issue."
Weather is just one factor to consider when betting on golf — not the only factor. But even a little advantage in understanding the weather compared to tee times can help with those last-minute decisions.
