The PGA TOUR looks to continue its momentum following the excitement of the Masters last week just up the coast from Augusta at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island.
Considering it's the week following a major, the field at Harbour Town is pleasantly surprising. Big names like Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay will be on hand this week, facing a very different test than the one they just saw at Augusta.
Harbour Town is one of the quirkiest courses visited annually by the PGA TOUR, calling for a different style of shot-making. It’s among the shorter courses on TOUR and demands players be accurate off the tee. Narrow fairways and small greens place an emphasis on staying in the short grass or scrambling to save par.
Those skills allow a different caliber of player to contend at the RBC Heritage, as we’ve seen with prior winners like Satoshi Kodaira and Wesley Bryan, each taking home this tournament in the last five years.
This group stands out among those with long odds as having the game and the current form to compete this weekend:
Matt Kuchar +6500 (DraftKings)
This season has not been Kuchar’s best, yet he has still showcased an ability to contend. He comes in boasting back-to-back top-20 finishes, including a runner-up at his last start at the Valero Texas Open.
Kuchar is also a longtime fan of Harbour Town, peaking with a win at this event back in 2014. His success at this venue doesn’t stop there – Kuchar has made the cut in each of his 17 appearances at Harbour Town and converted eight of those made cuts into a top 15 performance.
No doubt he feels right at home at Harbour Town thanks to his short game. Kuchar leads the golfing world in True Strokes Gained: Around the Green over the last 12 months, per DataGolf.
Most books have him listed at +4000, making him a steal at this number from DraftKings.
Kevin Streelman +10000 (DraftKings)
Harbour Town primarily asks players two questions: Can you keep the ball in play off the tee and can you scratch out pars from off the green?
Streelman excels in both areas. Over the last three months, he ranks in the top 10 in the world in Strokes Gained: Around the Green, per DataGolf. He also ranks fourth on the PGA TOUR this season in driving accuracy, hitting just shy of 70 percent of his possible fairways.
The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, just up the road from Harbour Town, is not the same animal, yet Streelman’s top-10 performance there at last summer’s PGA Championship is a perfect blueprint for him to contend this week. He’s shown that in past appearances at Harbour Town, earning three top 10s in his last seven visits.
He arrives this week riding three straight top 25 finishes, resulting in most sportsbooks listing him much lower than this 100-to-1 price.
Takumi Kanaya +25000 (DraftKings)
Venturing much further down the board, there’s reason to believe that this venue could set up nicely for Takumi Kanaya. The 23-year old Japan native is accurate off the tee and would rank in the top 40 in that stat if he had enough rounds to qualify.
Last week at the Masters, Kanaya hit 13 of 14 fairways in each of his two rounds before missing the cut. He did not have the answers from the second shot onward at Augusta, but expectations should change at Harbour Town.
DataGolf’s course fit tool compares courses on the PGA TOUR schedule and lists Austin Country Club as the most similar stylistically to Harbour Town. At the recent WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play at Austin Country Club, Kanaya played well, winning his early round pool to advance to the knockout round.
A course this size that demands accuracy off the tee should play into Kanaya’s game. He’s too good a fit to pass up at these odds, even in his first competitive rounds at this venue.
