Patrick Cantlay is the betting favorite for the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic this week in Detroit, trailed closely by 3M Open champion Tony Finau and Will Zalatoris.
Finau was the only player at the 3M Open to shoot four rounds in the 60s. He was the main beneficiary of a 5-over 41 on the back nine by heavy favorite Scott Piercy, who finished four back of Finau.
After a slow start to the season, Finau has three top-five finishes in his last three starts. He finds himself 17th in the FedExCup standings entering this week.
If you’re looking for consistency, though, look no further than Cantlay. He has top-15 finishes in six of his last seven stroke-play starts, and that’s not including a win with Xander Schauffele at the Zurich Classic. He’s sixth in the FedExCup standings and will look to make a dent in the lead Scottie Scheffler has at the top before the playoffs.
Cameron Davis is higher up on the board than usual because of his impressive run of play. His last three PGA TOUR results read T16-6-T8, and he won this tournament last year. Like Finau, he struggled to begin the year, missing three of four cuts at one point. Since the Masters, though, he’s played the weekend in nine of his 10 starts.
Any week could be the week that Zalatoris breaks through on the PGA TOUR — or he could miss the cut. Zalatoris has four top-10 finishes in his last eight starts, but he has also missed three cuts. He finishes T28 at the Open Championship his last time out.
Our Chris Murphy is high on Cameron Young this week, who has also been an all-or-nothing kind of player of late. Young has missed the cut in three of his last eight starts, but he impressively has four top-three finishes in that span, as well.
Max Homa is another big-timer on the FedExCup leaderboard this week. The Open Championship was his first missed cut since the Farmers in January, and his worst finish in that span was a T48 at the Masters. He also has three wins on TOUR since the start of 2021.
Past Winners
Like last week’s 3M Open, this will be the fourth edition of the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Nate Lashley won with a current tournament record of 25-under par in 2019. Bryson DeChambeau was the winner during the pandemic-shortened 2020 slate of golf, and Davis beat Troy Merritt and Joaquin Niemann in a playoff last year.
Course Preview
Detroit Golf Club presents a very similar challenge that TPC Twin Cities did last week — and that isn’t much of one.
Players will take on a 7,370-yard track this week outside the Motor City, a par-72. The front nine will be the more difficult one for the players this week, with scoring expected down the stretch with a wide open back nine.
Detroit Golf Club is longer than most courses that players will have seen this summer, so extra distance off the tee will definitely be a bigger boost than normal.
