The PGA TOUR is back this week with the Sanderson Farms Championship.
With most of the stars taking part in the Presidents Cup or playing over in Europe this month, this is a prime opportunity for a breakthrough win for someone looking to establish his career.
The Course
The Country Club of Jackson is on the longer side, measuring 7,460 yards for a par 72.
It’s also been a spot where players further down the odds board have snuck out with some wins. Prior to Sam Burns winning as one of the favorites last year, Cameron Champ was the closest to being near the top at +4500, and three of the last six winners here had odds to win the tournament in the triple digits.
There isn’t much to test the players here as the winner will need to get near 20-under par this week. The course caters to a few styles with bombers getting an edge, but it tends to come down to if someone can catch a hot putter on these Bermuda greens.
The Favorites
Burns is the clear name at the top at +1000. He's the defending champ this week and the lone member of the winning US team from last week to make the trip to Mississippi. It's been a decent spot for him with the win obviously, but he also finished third back in 2018.
The rest of the top names here come in around +2000 as players like Sahith Theegala, J.T. Poston, Russell Henley and Denny McCarthy are in this range. McCarthy has a great track record here with top 20s the past four years, and Theegala was also in contention last year before finishing eighth.
The Mid-Tier
I'm going to the DP World Tour vets for my first couple picks, starting with Thomas Detry at +4500 on FanDuel. Detry is long and has putted well overseas this season. He's finished inside the top 15 in five of his last eight starts worldwide, splitting time between Europe, the PGA TOUR and the KFT. He has flashed the talent and consistency in Europe but hasn't found a victory yet. However, his game is in good shape, and this field could be a chance for him to pop up.
Dean Burmester is another World Tour stalwart at +6600 on BetMGM, and he's a bomber who should be a good fit here. Burmester has a couple wins on the World Tour as he has been prolific on the Sunshine Tour throughout his career. He locked up his card pretty easily in the KFT Playoffs and recorded two strong finishes at The Open and the Scottish Open against much deeper fields than this one.
I also like Trey Mullinax who opened as high as +8000 and has been chopped to +5000 on BetRivers. Mullinax is among the longest guys on the PGA TOUR and does his best putting on Bermuda. He was fourth here a year ago and has been riding some solid form since his win at the Barbasol. He opened the new season with a missed cut at the Fortinet, but the ball striking was pretty good, so the hope here is the shift to more favorable greens will be to his benefit.
Brendan Steele is my last guy in this range at +6600 on most books. Steele missed the cut at the Fortinet, so I doubt he'll be too popular this week, but he was 17th here last year and has been a good driver for some time now. The short game has been a mess for awhile, but this is a good course fit for him if the putter cooperates.
The Longshots
I'll play a pair of longshots with two Korn Ferry grads in Ben Taylor and Erik Barnes. Taylor is as high as 175/1 on BetRivers, and he's an LSU guy who does his best putting on Bermuda. He closed the KFT season with a couple of top fives over the final few events then followed that with a 25th to start the PGA TOUR season a couple weeks ago.
Barnes fits the course as a bomber who can putt at 400/1 on DraftKings. He had a really strong start to his KFT campaign but closed in a bit of a rut. This one is a bit of a shot in the dark based on his playing style at a course I think suits his game.
