The 2022-2023 PGA TOUR season continues this Thursday with THE CJ CUP as the TOUR returns from Japan this past weekend, where Keegan Bradley picked up his first win since 2018.
Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, South Carolina. hosts THE CJ CUP this week, making this the fourth consecutive year where THE CJ CUP has been played at a different course. Congaree Golf Club hosted the 2021 Palmetto Championship where Garrick Higgo won his first PGA TOUR tournament.
This no-cut event features the best field of the early PGA TOUR season despite having only 78 players in the field. Six of the top 10 players in the world and 15 of the top 20 will tee it up on Thursday at Congaree, including FedEx Cup winner Rory McIlroy and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
McIlroy is looking to defend his title after winning the 2021 edition of THE CJ CUP when he shot 25 under par to hold off a charging Collin Morikawa at The Summit Club in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Course Preview
Congaree Golf Club measures 7,655 yards as a par 71 with bermudagrass greens. Tom Fazio designed the course in 2017, and it has hosted another PGA TOUR event, the Palmetto Championship, in 2021 as it filled in on the TOUR schedule for the 2021 RBC Canadian Open, which was canceled because of logistical challenges related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Past Winners
While this tournament has moved around, big names have continued to vault themselves to the top of the leaderboard each year. Past winners in the field this week include McIlroy (2021) and Justin Thomas (2019, 2017).
McIlroy shot a six-under 66, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 14th hole, on Sunday to win last year's CJ CUP by a stroke over Morikawa at The Summit Club, where Morikawa is a member. The Northern Irishman is looking for his 23rd PGA TOUR win and has had success in defending titles this year after winning the 2022 RBC Canadian Open — the RBC Canadian Open was last played before this event in 2019, which McIlroy also won.
