Live odds for every golfer

The odds we’ve been provided with in the futures markets in the past few seasons have been less than stellar. Sportsbooks have seemingly been increasingly weary to give the betting public strong odds in advance of major championships.

However, throughout this time we’ve seen odds get markedly better on the Monday of the week of the major. After odds “reset” when the week begins, there tends to be much more value in the market available to bettors.

With those odds currently available, there are very few players who are worth betting at the moment. Next week, I anticipate that we will see the odds drift, with a few golfers being likely to fall down the betting board.

Here are some bets that I have my eye on if the price is right.

Bet the U.S. Open, Win $200 (No Matter What!)

Patrick Cantlay

Cantlay seemed like an excellent candidate to contend at the PGA Championship, and he let plenty of people down. It was another letdown in a prolonged stretch of major championship disappointment for the number three ranked player in the world. The 30-year-old hasn't had a top-10 finish in a major since 2019.

Despite his struggles on the major-championship stage, Cantlay profiles as a strong fit for the U.S. Open. He typically hits the ball fairly long and straight, and has gained strokes off the tee in 12 of his past 13 measured events. He also is one of the best putters on TOUR and always seems to make the difficult clutch par putt when he needs it most.

There’s reason to be skeptical on whether or not Cantlay can bring his “A game” to a major championship, but that skepticism may provide an opportunity to buy low on the 2021 FedExCup champion and Player of the Year.

Target Number: +3000

Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson has made plenty of headlines of late, but none of them have to do with his golf game. Despite his resignation from the PGA TOUR, the USGA has made it clear that will not impact his ability to participate in this year’s U.S. Open.

Throughout his career, Johnson has been excellent in the U.S Open. In 14 career starts, the 37-year-old has seven top-20 finishes, including a win in 2016 at Oakmont.  He’s also finished in the top six in five of his past eight U.S. Open starts. He’s quite simply one of the best U.S. Open players on the planet.

The Country Club in Brookline will be an ideal fit for DJ. The course will require distance and accuracy, two things he has more of compared to much of the field when he’s at his best. He’s also had a lot of success in the Northeast throughout his career. In addition to his win at Oakmont (Pennsylvania), he’s won the 2020 Northern Trust (Massachusetts) and The 2020 Travelers Championship (Connecticut), along with plenty of other top-five finishes in the area.

Negative publicity can have a positive impact on odds in the golf betting world. The unpopular move to LIV combined with recent uninspiring play may result in a “bet the number” scenario on DJ.

Bryson DeChambeau

Having just returned to golf at the Memorial last week, this one is a longshot. DeChambeau's performance at Muirfield Village left a lot to be desired, but the fact that he was able to play was encouraging.

In his return, DeChambeau was poor statistically, but he did show some flashes of what makes him great when he is healthy. It’s very likely that he was using that start as a warmup and a chance to work out the kinks for the event he cares most about: the U.S. Open.

When things are clicking for DeChambeau, the U.S. Open is a perfect setup for his game. He hits the ball so far that even when he's inaccurate, he’s able to use a wedge or short iron to pick the ball out of the rough. In his 2021 U.S. Open victory, the 28-year-old gained an incredible 17.9 strokes from tee to green and absolutely dominated the field, winning by six strokes.

Like Johnson, DeChambeau also has a stellar track record in the Northeast. In addition to his 2021 U.S. Open win at Winged Foot (New York), he’s also won the 2018 Northern Trust (New Jersey) and the 2018 Dell Technologies Championship (Massachusetts).

It would be an incredible feat given his lack of activity this year, but it’s possible that his prices get to a point where it enters “auto bet” territory.
