Jordan Spieth outlasted Patrick Cantlay in a playoff hole on Sunday at Harbour Town to capture the RBC Heritage. It was a final-round 66 for Spieth that put him in position for his first win of the year, which pays off the hard work he has done to get his game back to an elite level.
The PGA TOUR now heads further south to Louisiana for the 2022 Zurich Classic, which is the only team event of the standard season. Players will pair up to play in various formats starting on Thursday in a tournament that provides a bit of a break from the standard week.
I'll be honest, this is a week that I usually use to refresh the batteries myself and play pretty light on the betting and DFS side. It is one that is difficult to project and, to me, it's akin to the All-Star break in other sports where it's mostly for fun until the closing stretch.
While some big names are pairing up this week, I'll be looking for the second tier to provide some value for any bets I may put together for the Zurich.
Best Buys
Joaquin Niemann & Mito Pereira (+2000)
This Chilean duo got a bit of a trial run in an individual setting on Sunday at the RBC Heritage. They were both within shouting distance of the lead to start the day and were paired in the same final round tee time. They're known to be good friends and likely have some rapport in this type of setting, which as we saw last year from the Australian champs, certainly has some value.
Niemann and Pereira are both playing some really good golf of late, especially off of their week on Hilton Head. Niemann in particular has turned himself into one of the better all-around players in the game and they both have a winning nature about them.
I'll buy into the value of this duo for its winning upside, but also the likelihood that the pair will slip just behind the elite pairings when odds are released on Monday.
Shane Lowry & Ian Poulter (+2000)
The play of Shane Lowry this year certainly merits a win to his name, but he has fallen just short a number of times including most recently by one shot at the RBC Heritage. He made one really poor mistake in his final round that ultimately cost him the tournament, but he keeps bouncing back into contention even after tough losses.
My look at this pairing is as much about Lowry as it is a flash of recent form for Ian Poulter at Harbour Town. He was in the mix going into Sunday and even with him falling back due to a poor final round, I know he is a player that can run hot with form. Poulter seems to be striking it better and this team could be tough to beat with their short games. This is certainly another pair that I'll look to buy at longer odds.
Max Homa & Talor Gooch (+2500)
These are two players who are both having outstanding seasons. They both excel with their ball striking when in form and I expect we see them come out ready to contend for this tournament.
Each was last seen playing the weekend at the Masters, though it was only Gooch who held it together for a top-15 finish. I think they could potentially pair well together, especially if they can get some things going on the greens.
They'll certainly be at longer odds than the top tier, but to me, they have true winning upside.
