With last week's FedEx St. Jude Championship in the rear-view mirror, we can now look forward to the second round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs — the BMW Championship in Olympia Fields, Illinois.
Olympia Fields is a par-70, 7,366-yard track designed by Willie Park Jr. With thick rough and firm greens, Olympia Fields is likely to play extremely difficult, just as it did when Jon Rahm won with a -4 final score in 2020.
Here are my two picks in the first-round leader market for the 2023 BMW Championship.
BMW Championship First-Round Leader Picks
Adam Svensson +6600 (BetRivers)
First-Round Tee Time: 9:37 a.m. ET
The first golfer to target in this market is Adam Svensson, who is teeing off with Matt Fitzpatrick on Thursday morning.
The morning wave almost always performs better than the afternoon, but those splits are going to be amplified this week. There are two aspects of Olympia Fields that make it a difficult challenge for even the best golfers in the world — thick rough and firm greens.
The latter is more important regarding the morning/afternoon splits, as the greens are only going to get firmer and faster as the day progresses. Considering how tough these greens will be in the afternoon, the morning wave has an advantage.
That brings us to Svensson, who is one of four Canadians to win a TOUR event this season (The RSM Classic). The rest of his season hasn't lived up to that performance, but Svensson enters this week in good form with five straight top-40 finishes, including his T7 performance at the Wyndham Championship.
His putter has been the only inconsistent part of his game over the past few months and that could get bailed out with close approach shots on the soft morning greens. Even if that doesn't come to fruition, perhaps his putting will turn around this week.
When Svensson's putter is hot, it is HOT. We saw that play out when he gained 3.01 strokes on the greens at The RSM Classic.

Byeong-Hun An +4500 (BetMGM)
First-Round Tee Time: 9:48 a.m. ET
Byeong-Hun An is also worth targeting in the first-round leader market.
Simply put, An is playing his best golf of the year. He has gained strokes off the tee, around the green and putting in each of his past four tournaments. Perhaps he can carry that momentum and take advantage of his early tee time. He hasn't missed a cut since the Rocket Mortgage Classic and has nearly won numerous times over that stretch, including a T3 finish at the Genesis Scottish Open and a runner-up performance at the Wyndham Championship.
He also boasts the advantage of having played here in 2020 (T12).
