2023 Shriners Children's Open Preview

The PGA Tour heads to TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas for the 2023 Shriners Children's Open.

This is the third of seven FedExCup Fall events after Luke List emerged victorious at the Sanderson Farms Championship last weekend. List captured a dramatic win in a five-way playoff for his second career PGA Tour win. List is currently in the field this week and priced at +5500 to win outright at bet365.

For the second week in a row, Ludvig Aberg is atop the Monday morning odds board as he is tied with defending Shriners Children's Open winner Tom Kim at +1500 for the shortest odds to win outright this week.

After winning the Ryder Cup on Team Europe and finishing T2 at the Sanderson Farms Championship, Aberg will play for the third consecutive week in Las Vegas. This will be the Swede's 11th PGA Tour start this season, and he has made the cut in nine of those 10 PGA Tour events so far.

Dating back to the Wyndham Championship, Aberg has finished in the top 14 in each of his last five worldwide starts, including a win at the Omega European Masters on the DP World Tour. This will be Aberg's first appearance at the Shriners Children's Open.

Like Aberg, Tom Kim also played in a few DP World Tour events in September, and he has recorded seven consecutive top-24 finishes dating back to the Genesis Scottish Open in July.

Kim's form throughout the bag has been strong as he has gained strokes putting in six of his last seven starts, he's gained strokes around the green in seven straight, and he's gained strokes on approach in six of his last seven as well.

Si Woo Kim and Cameron Davis are the only other golfers with odds of 30/1 or shorter at open on Monday morning, and they are tied at +2700.

Si Woo Kim has not played on the PGA Tour since the TOUR Championship, but he did win a very important gold medal at the Asian Games since then. He was part of the four-man South Korea team (along with Sungjae Im) which won the Asian Games team portion by 25 strokes, which means that he and Im will both be exempt from South Korea's mandatory 21-month military service requirement (and only serve in a two-month program instead).

This was the first year that professionals have been allowed to participate in the Asian Games for golf, and Im and Si Woo Kim took advantage.

Si Woo Kim will be playing in the Shriners Children's Open for the seventh time this week (including the sixth straight year), and he has four top-25 finishes at the event, along with a T8 last season.

Cameron Davis also enters with momentum as he finished solo third at the Fortinet Championship a few weeks ago and has finished in the top 10 in four of his last five PGA Tour starts dating back to the 3M Open in July. Davis will make his fifth Shriners Children's Open appearance this week, and he has finished between 27th and 52nd in all four of his prior starts in Las Vegas.

LPGA Tour golfer Lexi Thompson is also in the field this week as she becomes the seventh woman to play on the PGA Tour. She has +300000 outright odds and is +3500 to finish in the top 20.

Course Preview

TPC Summerlin measures 7,255 yards as a par-71 with three par-5s, four par-3s and 11 par-4s.

The Tour has stopped at TPC Summerlin regularly since 1992 and the course features bentgrass greens. The course was designed by Bobby Weed with Fuzzy Zoeller serving as Player Consultant and features abundance of honey mesquite and pine trees that line the fairways and will put an added emphasis on hitting fairways this week.

Historically, Strokes Gained: Approach and Strokes Gained: Putting have had the highest correlation with Strokes Gained: Total in Las Vegas. Driving Accuracy is more correlated with Strokes Gained: Total than usual, while Driving Distance is slightly less correlated with Strokes Gained: Total at TPC Summerlin when compared to an average PGA Tour course.

Golfers will hit around one third of their approach shots from 100-150 yards this week, so dialing in wedges and short irons from this range will be key to converting opportunities at TPC Summerlin.

Shriners Children's Open Past Winners

Tom Kim, Martin Laird, Ben Martin and Ryan Moore are among past winners in the field for this week's Shriners Children's Open.
