The 2023 edition of the U.S. Open will mark the first in Los Angeles since 1948 and the first major championship in the L.A. area in 28 years. The 123rd U.S. Open will also be the first major championship held at Los Angeles Country Club.

Last year's U.S. Open winner at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., Matt Fitzpatrick, is +3000 to defend his title. Fitzpatrick won at Harbour Town Golf Links in April at the RBC Heritage and is looking for his second win on the PGA Tour this season. He hopes to bounce back after a missed cut in his most recent major championship appearance at the PGA Championship.

Scottie Scheffler enters as bet365's favorite at +650 odds to win his first U.S. Open. The Texas Longhorn is in the midst of a phenomenal run in which he has finished in the top 12 in 15 consecutive PGA Tour events, including four consecutive top-five finishes.

The World No. 1 also has two wins in this span and leads the Tour in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green, Off the Tee, Approach the Green, Tee to Green and Total. While his putter has been poor (146th in SG: Putting at -0.231), it's clear oddsmakers expect his tee-to-green game to play at the toughest test in golf. Scheffler finished in a tie for second at The Country Club in last year's U.S. Open.

Two-time major winner Jon Rahm has the second-shortest odds to win the U.S. Open at +925. Rahm leads the FedExCup Regular Season Points List and has the most wins on the PGA Tour this year with four, including the Masters Tournament.

The 2021 U.S. Open champion at Torrey Pines struggled to a T50 finish at the PGA Championship, but bounced back at the Memorial Tournament where he finished T16 and was second in the field in SG: Approach (+9.64 for the week). Rahm won the last time the PGA Tour was in Los Angeles, at Riviera Country Club, in February at The Genesis Invitational.

Rory McIlroy, the 2011 U.S. Open champion at Congressional Country Club, opened with the third-shortest odds to win at LACC at +1000 on bet365 but has slid to +1300 as of Monday afternoon. McIlroy enters off of contending at the RBC Canadian Open and consecutive top-10 finishes at the PGA Championship and the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday. McIlroy ranks second behind only Scheffler in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green at +1.870 and has finished in the top 10 in four consecutive U.S. Opens.

PGA Championship winner and five-time major champion Brooks Koepka enters at +1200 to win in Los Angeles. Koepka has two U.S. Open wins — 2017 at Erin Hills and 2018 at Shinnecock Hills. He has only been beaten by one player (Rahm at the Masters) in the two majors so far in 2023. The Florida Panthers fan last played at LIV DC, where he finished 14th. In his last five U.S. Open starts, Koepka has finished outside the top four only once (T55 in 2022).

The Memorial Tournament winner, Viktor Hovland, has the fifth-shortest odds at +1700. The Norwegian has paired a surge in putting with his strong iron play recently as he has three of his top-four SG: Putting performances this season in his last four starts, including the win at Muirfield Village and T2 at the PGA Championship. The four-time PGA Tour winner has top-seven finishes in the last three major championships but is still seeking his first major victory.

Course Preview

Los Angeles Country Club (North) is a 7,421-yard par-70 designed by George C. Thomas in 1927 and restored by Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner and Geoff Shackelford in 2010.

The course features Tifway 2 Bermudagrass fairways and pure Bentgrass greens that will be rolling at a 13 on the stimpmeter. The rough features three-to-four inch Tifway2/Bandera Bermudagrass, which will make missing fairways and greens especially penal.

Los Angeles Country Club will host the first U.S. Open with Bentgrass greens since Pinehurst in 2005. The 2010 restoration eliminated non-native vegetation throughout the course in an effort to revive the course's original rugged look.

The course features three par-5s, 10 par-4s and five par-3s. Six of the 10 par-4s are listed on the scorecard at 480 yards or longer, including holes 16, 17 and 18.

Past Winners

Fitzpatrick, Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Gary Woodland, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Martin Kaymer and Justin Rose are all among past U.S. Open winners in the field this week.
