The PGA TOUR heads down I-35 in central Texas from Austin to San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio (Oaks).
With this event sandwiched between the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and the Masters, there are few elite players in the field, but this might mean a better opportunity to cash in on a longshot. Whereas nine players opened at 22/1 or shorter to win last week in Austin, only four players have odds of 22/1 or shorter at open this week at bet365 to win the Valero Texas Open.
Just 10 players in the field this week have qualified for the Masters next week, but a win for any of the other players would punch him a ticket to Augusta National next week. In addition to the current field, four players will qualify for the Valero Texas Open via today's Monday qualifier (find scores here).
Tyrrell Hatton opens as the favorite this week at +1200. While he struggled in Austin, Hatton is coming off of consecutive top-five finishes in his last two stroke-play events. Hatton tied for fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and finished in solo second place at THE PLAYERS Championship.
Corey Conners opens with the second-shortest odds on bet365 at +2000. Conners picked up his only PGA TOUR victory here in 2019 and has finished in the top 35 all four times he has played at TPC San Antonio. He went 2-1-0 in group play at the Match Play, with his only defeat coming against Cameron Young, who went on to finish runner-up to Sam Burns.
Rickie Fowler and Si Woo Kim opened with the third-shortest odds to win this week at +2200. Fowler has moved down to +1800 as he needs a win this week to qualify for the Masters and has been riding a wave of momentum with top-31 finishes in each of his last five stroke-play starts. Fowler has two top-17 finishes here in three starts and went 2-1-0 in Match Play last week, including a win over Jon Rahm.
Kim is already a winner on the TOUR this year after earning his fourth TOUR victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii in January. His odds have shortened slightly to +2000 as of Monday afternoon. He has finished in the top 25 in his last three starts in San Antonio and has seven top-40 finishes in his last eight starts this season.
Course Preview
TPC San Antonio Oaks Course is a 7,522-yard par-72 designed by Greg Norman that features Bermudagrass greens. The course features a standard layout of four par-5s, 10 par-4s and four par-3s. It is one of the longer courses on TOUR, and although it is tree-lined, the rough isn't very penal. Wind and firm playing conditions will be the biggest potential obstacles for players this week.
Past Winners
The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio hosts the Valero Texas Open for the 13th time this week. Reigning champion J.J. Spaun is in the field to defend his title after winning by two strokes over Matt Jones and Matt Kuchar at 13-under last year.
Along with Spaun, Corey Conners, Andrew Landry, Kevin Chappell, Charley Hoffman, Jimmy Walker and Martin Laird are all among former champions of the Valero Texas Open in the field this week.
