The PGA TOUR heads to Palm Harbor, Florida for the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead Course). This is the fourth and final week on the Florida Swing before the TOUR heads to Texas for two weeks before The Masters. This week's field features eight of the top-32 players in the Official World Golf Rankings, highlighted by world No. 10 Justin Thomas.
Thomas opened at bet365 with the shortest odds to win the tournament at +900. Thomas finished T60 at THE PLAYERS Championship this past weekend but had not finished outside the top 25 in his prior six starts on TOUR. This will be Thomas' sixth appearance at the Valspar Championship, and he has four top-18 finishes in five starts (including a T3 last year).
Jordan Spieth enters with the second-shortest odds to win the Valspar at 12/1 after barely making the cut at THE PLAYERS and rallying on the weekend to finish T19. This is Spieth's first appearance at the Snake Pit since 2018, but he does have a win here in five starts in 2015.
Matt Fitzpatrick opened with the third-shortest odds at bet365 at +1600. The reigning US Open champion finished T5 here last year but is coming off of a missed cut at TPC Sawgrass.
Two-time defending Valspar Championship winner Sam Burns is the fourth and final player whose odds opened at shorter than 20/1 with a price of +1800 at bet365. Burns finished T35 at THE PLAYERS but had missed the cut in his previous two events. Burns has finished no lower than T30 in his four starts at the Snake Pit.
Course Preview
Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead Course) is a 7,340-yard par 71 that features Poa Trivialis greens. The course just north of Tampa was designed by Larry Packard in the early 1970s as it puts a premium on positioning off the tee. The course features narrow fairways whose angles players must manage before reaching difficult green complexes.
The Copperhead Course is known for its famous three-hole stretch of 16, 17 and 18 known as the Snake Pit. The 16th hole is a 460-yard par four dogleg right into an elevated green with trouble lurking on both sides of the fairway nicknamed Moccasin. The 17th hole is a 215-yard par three nicknamed Rattler. The finishing 18th hole is a 445-yard par four with bunkers on each side of the fairway nicknamed Copperhead.
Past Winners
The Copperhead Course at Innisbrok Resort sets up as one of the tougher tests on TOUR with no one shooting below 17-under in the last 10 years. Past champions Sam Burns, Jordan Spieth, Adam Hadwin and Kevin Streelman are among those in the field this week.
Burns, who defended his 2021 title here last year with a playoff win over Davis Riley, is looking to become the first PGA TOUR player to win the same tournament in three consecutive years since Steve Stricker won the John Deere Classic in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
