2023 Wyndham Championship Preview
The PGA Tour heads to Greensboro, North Carolina for the 2023 Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club following Lee Hodges's runaway victory at The 3M Open. The Wyndham Championship is the final event on the PGA Tour's regular season schedule before the FedExCup Playoffs begin in one week.
With only the top 70 (instead of 125) on the FedExCup Points List reaching the playoffs, the Wyndham Championship sets up as a crucial week for many golfers near that threshold who need to play well or even win to advance to next week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Unfortunately, the 2022 Wyndham Championship winner, Tom Kim, will not be in the field this week as he recovers from a grade-1 ankle sprain suffered the week of The Open Championship (which he played through as he still finished in a tie for second).
Kim became the second-youngest winner on the PGA Tour since World War II with his Wyndham Championship win as he shot a final-round 61 and won by a commanding five-stroke margin. He will reach the FedExCup Playoffs comfortably as he ranks 14th on the FedExCup Points List.
Sungjae Im was one of those players five shots behind Kim here last year, and Im opened at +1900 as one of two outright betting favorites this week in North Carolina. As of Tuesday afternoon, Im has fallen to +2200 in the outright market at bet365. The South Korean has played the Wyndham Championship four times before, finishing in the top nine three times and in the top 24 all four times.
Im tied for 20th at The Open and now has three top-30 finishes in his last five starts, but he is coming off of a missed cut at this past weekend's 3M Open. He sits at 36th in the FedExCup Points List as he is safe to make the playoffs.
Hideki Matsuyama also opened on Monday morning at bet365 tied for the shortest outright odds at +1900. As of Tuesday afternoon, he remains a co-favorite at +1900. The 2021 Masters champion is just 56th on the FedExCup Points List, and he has some work left to make sure he advances to the TOUR Championship for the 10th consecutive year. He is coming off of a T30 finish at the 3M Open and has a T3 at Sedgefield in 2016.
Sam Burns opened on Monday with the third-shortest outright odds in Greensboro at +2200. His odds have dropped to +2700 in the bet365 enhanced win outright market as of Tuesday afternoon.
The Louisiana native who has excelled on Bermudagrass greens in his career on Tour is 19th on the FedExCup Points List but has missed the cut in four of his last eight starts, including in his most recent tournament at The Open. Burns has only played in the Wyndham Championship once before, when he finished T13 in 2020.
Russell Henley is the fourth and final golfer at open with odds at 25/1 or shorter at +2400. Unlike the other favorites in the outright market, Henley's odds have shortened to +2200 as he now has the second-shortest outright odds at bet365 on Monday night.
The Georgia Bulldog has had success in Greensboro before as he has three consecutive top-nine finishes at the Wyndham Championship. Overall, Henley has finished in the top 46 in five of his six appearances at the Wyndham Championship.
While he missed the cut in his last start at The Open Championship, Henley still has top-20 finishes in eight of his last 11 starts. Over that span, the four-time PGA Tour winner has gained strokes on approach 10 of 11 times, but the lone exception came in his last start. Henley is safe to make the FedExCup Playoffs next week as he is 34th on the FedExCup Points List.
Si Woo Kim, who opened at +3000 on Monday morning at bet365, has risen up the board to become a co-favorite at +1900 as of Tuesday afternoon. Kim won the 2016 Wyndham Championship and has four total top-five finishes at Sedgefield in seven starts. He is looking for momentum after consecutive missed cuts at the Travelers Championship and The Open, but he is safely in to the FedExCup Playoffs at 18th in the standings.
Sedgefield Country Club Course Preview
Sedgefield Country Club is a 7,131-yard par-70 with two par-5s, four par-3s and 12 par-4s. This Donald Ross course features Bermudagrass greens, fairways, rough (a relatively short 2.5 inches thick) and tees, with the putting surfaces rolling at a 12.5 on the stimpmeter.
Historically, Strokes Gained: Off the Tee has been important at Sedgefield, with accuracy being more correlated with Strokes Gained: Total than at a normal course on Tour. Conversely, driving distance is less correlated with Strokes Gained: Total at Sedgefield Country Club than at a normal course on Tour.
SG: Approach, SG: Around the Green and SG: Putting have all been about as correlated with SG: Total as at the average PGA Tour course over the past three Wyndham Championships.
