The PGA Tour heads to Avondale, Louisiana from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for the 2023 Zurich Classic of New Orleans at TPC Louisiana. Since 2017, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans has been the lone team event on the PGA Tour schedule, and this week 80 two-man teams will compete in the sixth playing in this format.
Each two-man team will play Four-ball (best ball) on Thursday before playing Foursomes (alternate-shot) on Friday. The top 33 teams and ties will make the weekend when teams will play Four-ball on Saturday before closing with Foursomes on Sunday. With 160 total players in the field, it is the largest field of the year on the PGA Tour, with each winner receiving 400 FedEx Cup points and $1.5M.
Eight of the top 20 players in the Official World Golf Rankings are in the field this week, including defending champions Patrick Cantlay (fourth in OWGR) and Xander Schauffele (fifth in OWGR).
Cantlay and Schauffele are rolling into town with momentum after each player finished in the top five this past weekend at the RBC Heritage. Unsurprisingly, they opened as the betting favorites at BetMGM at +350 to win outright after they set the tournament record at 29-under par.
They are followed by the two-man team of Max Homa and Collin Morikawa at +700. Both Homa and Morikawa, or Homakawa, if you will, hail from the Los Angeles area and went to college at the University of California, Berkeley. They are playing together this year after Homa played with Talor Gooch (T21) last year while Morikawa was paired with Viktor Hovland (T29).
Billy Horschel is the only player to win this event as both an individual (2013) and as a part of a team (2018 with Scott Piercy). He and Sam Burns teamed up last year to finish in solo second at -27, two strokes behind Cantlay and Schauffele. They opened with the third-shortest odds to win outright at +1000 at BetMGM.
Sungjae Im and Keith Mitchell opened with the fourth-shortest odds to win the 2023 Zurich Classic of New Orleans at +1200. This is another newly-formed team, although both players played here last season. Mitchell and Brandt Snedeker missed the cut last year at -5 while Im and Byeong-Hun An finished T14 at -20. Im finished T7 this past weekend at the RBC Heritage and has finished in the top 21 in each of his last five starts (all of which were designated events).
Finally, Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim were the fifth and final team with odds shorter than 20/1 as they opened at +1600. The Kims famously defeated Cantlay and Schauffele at the Presidents Cup on Saturday in 2022, and they could be poised to pull another upset this week.
Course Preview
TPC Louisiana is a 7,425-yard par-72 designed by Pete Dye featuring Bermudagrass greens with Poa Trivialis overseed. The course features greenside water and bunkers throughout, which has rewarded strong approach play over the years. Consequently, players who get hot with their irons and putter who are not necessarily elite off the tee have shown that they can compete at TPC Louisiana.
The par-3s are the most challenging part of the course, with all four playing over 205 yards with water looming to sink wayward approaches. Three of the four par-3s are on odd-numbered holes, so teams can strategically plan for the stronger long-iron player to hit three of these tee shots in Foursomes (alternate-shot).
Past Winners
TPC Louisiana hosted this event in 2005 and has been the host each year of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans since 2007. This year's tournament will be the 17th playing at TPC Louisiana, and a handful of past winners are in the field this week. In addition to Cantlay and Schauffele, Billy Horschel, Ryan Palmer, Jonas Blixt, Nick Watney and Scott Piercy are all teeing it up in the Bayou this week.
