Black Desert Championship Preview
The PGA Tour will head to a new venue as the Fall Swing hits Black Desert Resort Golf Course in Ivins, Utah. It is a really nice sight to see the Tour head to places it usually does not play at. The fall is a perfect time to take a risk and do that considering not many people are watching, the fields are desperate to simply "get started," and it is a great thing to simply switch it up.
Since we have no data from this golf course, it will be a tricky handicap. What we know is that this resort-style course will not be a very tough test for these PGA Tour pros. We have seen mountain golf or altitude golf many times before, and what happens more times than not is that the scoring conditions are very easy.
By no means are these fairways wide, but there is a little room for a wayward drive. If you get on the tee and have a big miss, then you will find yourself in trouble. This is similar to what we see at TPC Scottsdale, where a wide miss can end up behind a rock and you will be left to pitch out into the fairway. I believe this event will lend itself to a fairly easy test off the tee and end up rewarding the best approach players.
Although it is in the mid-7,000s in terms of scorecard yardage, the altitude will make it play around 7,000. Anytime we see a resort course, the scoring is low. Expect the winner to be around the -20 range this week.
Let's dive into the Black Desert Championship odds.
Black Desert Championship Odds: Keith Mitchell Sits Atop Board
Keith Mitchell (+1600) is your betting favorite. He comes in off a third-place finish at the Sanderson Farms Championship. That's great, but he probably should have won that event. The three-putt on the 72nd hole had him miss the playoff. Sure, Mitchell (+1600) hit the ball really well and nearly won, but paying 16/1 for a one-time PGA Tour winner is a horrible bet.
Kurt Kitayama (+2500) finished his season on a great note with some elite ball-striking results in his last few starts. He is a golfer who is both long and straight off the tee and will probably get to club down a ton in order to hit fairways. Kitayama plays out of Vegas and knows how to deal with the altitude.
Stephen Jaeger (+3000) played well last week but it was a lot of putting. That is a great sign for a golfer who usually struggles on the greens. He does have a great result at altitude before that came back when he was on the Korn Ferry Tour.
Patrick Fishburn (+3500), Zac Blair (+7000), and Peter Kuest (+20000) all have Utah ties and will be trendy names for the week. Blair is the shortest hitter of the bunch but will surely hit the most fairways.
Michael Thorbjornsen (+3500) is brewing with the driver and the putter. He will need to get the approach play going if he wants to win but I love that he will have a ton of wedges around this course.
Beau Hossler (+2800), Seamus Power (+2800), Erik van Rooyen (+3000), Chris Kirk (+3000), Ben Griffin (+3000), and Patrick Rodgers (+3000) round out the rest of the golfers sub-30/1.
