We’re back for another edition of prop bets at a major championship with 2024 British Open props, including nationality bets and exotic picks for four different golfers, including Adam Scott.

The 152nd Open Championship, also known as the 2024 British Open, returns to Royal Troon Golf Club for the first time since the historic duel between Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson in 2016.

The early reports from Royal Troon show some potential heavy wind and rain showers in the forecast throughout the tournament, which could make scoring conditions all the more difficult. Be sure to keep an eye on this as wave advantages can happen, just like last time at Royal Troon when Mickelson and Stenson were on the right side of the draw.

Major weeks often offer some juicy numbers for outright plays on big-name golfers, but in addition to those types of wagers, there are also opportunities to find value in more creative markets.

One of those markets is nationality props, and I’ve identified four golfers below in different nationality markets who I believe offer strong value at their respective numbers.

Adam Scott is coming off of his best finish of the season and has always thoroughly enjoyed links golf.

If not for Robert MacIntyre’s heroics over the final three holes last week (and a fortuitous drop from a sprinkler in the thick rough), Scott would have taken home the Scottish Open and claimed his 15th PGA Tour win.

The 2013 Masters winner came so close to winning a British Open in 2012 when he held a four-shot lead entering the final round at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, but he collapsed down the stretch and finished a shot behind winner Ernie Els after a final-round 75.

Thursday will mark the 93rd consecutive major that the Aussie has teed it up, and his game is trending in the right direction. Despite being 43 years old, Scott can still generate plenty of speed in his swing and get it out there with the best of them.

Scott ranks 26th in Strokes Gained: Total for the 2024 PGA Tour season as he has been solid throughout the bag. However, he hadn't put the pieces of his game together very well until last week, and I like his chances to keep it going at Royal Troon.

He also typically putts very well across the pond, often preferring to take out the flatstick from off the green instead of taking on a delicate chip.

With Cam Smith sputtering on LIV Golf and Hideki Matsuyama always being a bit sporadic, no other player in this market really jumps out at me as having a high floor like Scott.

Consequently, I will gladly side with a veteran who is playing well at odds north of 10-1 in a market without anyone I'm scared to take on.

Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau have won the first three majors of the season and are arguably playing better than anybody else in the world right now. Collin Morikawa is next in line after a remarkably consistent summer of golf thus far.

But this week at the British Open, I like another American a little bit farther down the board.

His game may not suggest it at surface level, but Tony Finau has enjoyed quite a bit of success on links golf courses over the years.

In his seven career appearances at The Open Championship, Finau has finished in the top 30 six times and has multiple top 10s, including a third-place finish in 2019 at Royal Portrush.

Back in 2016 at Royal Troon, Finau finished 18th in his first ever trip to the British Open, so he should have positive memories of the course this week. Additionally, Finau heads across the pond in very solid form.

His last five starts have all resulted in finishes inside the top 20, including a tie for third at Pinehurst at the U.S. Open and a tie for fifth at the Travelers Championship in his most recent outing.

For the season, the big fella ranks sixth in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green and third in Strokes Gained: Approach. Those type of ball-striking numbers will be crucial this week, especially if the wind starts to really blow.

Putting has often held Finau back, but slower fescue greens should neutralize that a bit and could maybe even free up his stroke knowing he doesn’t have to worry about break as much. The greens at Royal Troon are significantly smaller than those at most other British Open courses, so this will help limit his lag putts and add an emphasis on his strong tee-to-green play.

Ultimately, I’ll take an elite ball-striker with major championship pedigree to finish as the top American if you’re going to give me juicy odds at 18-1.

Get it done Big Tone!

Give me a massive longshot on Justin Rose here in the top European market.

While many of his contemporaries moved over to LIV Golf, Rose stayed on the PGA Tour because of his desire to add a second major championship to a career filled with many accomplishments.

For the first time in ages, he had to get into the field the hard way this week by going through final qualifying in the UK to snag one of the final spots for this week. Oddly enough given his roots, the British Open has actually been the worst major for Rose over the years.

That’s not to say he hasn’t had bright moments at The Open — he tied for fourth in 1998 as the low amateur in his first ever appearance and also tied for second in 2018 at Carnoustie.

Nonetheless, over the last five years, the British Open has been his worst major, but all it takes is one week to change that narrative. Rose is no stranger to bringing his best to the biggest stages as he finished inside the top 25 the last time this championship was held at Royal Troon in 2016.

Rose finished sixth at the PGA Championship earlier this year at Valhalla, and while that is just one of two top-30 finishes for him in 16 starts in 2024, he’s shown plenty of flashes of high quality golf.

As Rose has gotten older, he has lost some length off the tee, but that should be neutralized this week with plenty of hills and run outs in these undulating fairways. There will be many holes where players take less than driver off the tee, and Rose has shown that he can thrive in these shorter tests, like when he won the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion.

Rose also won just last February on the PGA Tour at another shorter coastal golf course in his AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am victory.

Rose has long been an elite putter, and if he brings the iron play that has made him such a staple near the top of leaderboards for years, he can absolutely contend this week. His upside is being underrated, and I'll take a chance on him at juicy 50-1 odds as the low European.

It has been a bummer missing Louis Oosthuizen compete in major championships over the last couple of years. He’s been a staple in them over the last decade, with so many gut-wrenching close calls and top-five finishes. He hasn't played in a major yet this season, but because of his win at St Andrews in 2010, he is still fully exempt into the British Open until he is 60 years old, just like Tiger Woods.

While we don’t see him tee it up much these days, Oosthuizen has been one of the most consistent golfers on LIV Golf all season. LIV Golf does not offer the same level of detailed statistics as the PGA Tour does, specifically Strokes Gained data, but in the season long individual player race, Oosthuizen ranks fifth out of 56 golfers.

Additionally, he leads LIV Golf in Total Scrambling, ranks third in Putting Average and is third in Fairway Hit Percentage.

The 41-year-old has always had an extremely balanced game and has long been an elite links golf player given his time growing up in the winds of South Africa.

With only eight Africans in this week’s field, Oosty at plus money feels like a bit of a no-brainer given his current form and major championship pedigree.

I would also endorse him as a top-five bet at +1600, and Oosthuizen could even be worth a dart to win at 80-1 or better.
