TOUR Championship Preview: 'Without Starting Strokes' Market Worth Considering

If you are new to this event, you may be confused as to why some golfers already have a score next to their name. For Example, season-long #1 Scottie Scheffler will start the event at -10. This is the Tour's way of rewarding his season-long success and giving the top players an advantage. It is similar to a top seed in the NFL getting a bye in the playoffs.

According to the PGA's website, here is how the starting strokes are hashed out: "The FedExCup points leader after the first two playoff events will begin the TOUR Championship at 10-under par. The No. 2 player will start at 8-under. The No. 3 player starts at 7-under; the No. 4 player starts at 6-under; and the No. 5 player starts at 5-under. Players 6-10 start at 4-under; players 11-15 start at 3-under; players 16-20 start at 2-under; players 21-25 start at 1-under; and players 26-30 start at even par."

To no one's surprise, Scheffler (+100 at DraftKings) and Xander Schauffele (+240) are the two names atop the odds board. They are on opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of success at East Lake, however.

Although Scheffler has finished sixth, second and fifth in four starts here, they are fairly disappointing results in terms of where he started the week. He has also blown a big lead at East Lake before. What has hurt him is his putter, as he has never gained strokes on the greens at East Lake. But this has been a better putting season for Scheffler, and I would not be shocked if he figures out these greens a tad more.

Schauffele, aka "Mr. East Lake," loves this course more than anyone. He has won here before and has three separate runners-up in seven trips. This has been Schauffele's most successful season, so he should be very excited for the week. There is a caveat to this: East Lake underwent renovations after last year's event. Changes or not, the X-Man has been consistent all season long and is always a threat in Atlanta.

Collin Morikawa is +2500 to get the job done this week. He has posted two straight less-than-stellar ball striking showings, which is a bit concerning. This puts a ton of stress on his putter, which is never a good thing for Morikawa.

Atlanta resident Sungjae Im opens at +10000 and comes into the week off a solid T11 in Colorado. He bounced back after his worst off-the-tee week of his career with a very solid showing, gaining over four strokes ball striking. Sungjae has been hitting the golf ball extremely well over the last two months and is a problem on Bermuda Grass. There is not a world in which Sungjae wins the FedEx Cup, but he is a threat to win the "Shadow Leaderboard" market.

If you are interested in betting this event but do not see any value because the top of the board has such a big advantage, consider betting in the "Without Starting Strokes" market. This market prices the golfers as if everyone starts at even par, like a normal PGA Tour event. This way, you can hit a +2500 winner without having to deal with Scottie Scheffler starting with a 10-shot lead.

The rest of the names below +2000 are Hideki Matsuyama (+1200), Rory McIlroy (+1600) and Ludvig Aberg (+2000). In reality, the names under this threshold are more than likely the only ones able to win the TOUR Championship with the starting strokes included.
