2024 Procore Championship Picks & Predictions
Tony Sartori: J.J. Spaun +4000 (FanDuel)
J.J. Spaun enters this week in great form, having made the weekend in each of his past six tournaments. Spaun boasts three top-10 finishes over that stretch, including his most recent T3 performance at the Wyndham Championship.
It was a great, all-around performance as he gained strokes in every category across the board, while also remaining more accurate and longer off the tee than the field average. Spaun should be able to carry that well roundedness to Silverado Resort this week, a venue at which he has posted two top-11 finishes over the past four years.
That success makes sense as Spaun possesses a strong short game and ranks above the Tour average in Strokes Gained: Around the Green. Last season, each of the top five finishers here ranked 15th or higher among the field in that category, the only statistic or metric in which such a trend occurred.
Additionally, 17.4% of approach shots at Silverado Resort come from the 125-150 yard range, the largest distribution among the 25-yard range groupings. This season, Spaun ranks above the Tour average in birdie-or-better percentage from that distance.
Spencer Aguiar: J.J. Spaun +4000 (FanDuel)
My one concern with J.J. Spaun would be that his month-long break came right after a run that saw him post six made cuts in a row, including back-to-back top-nine finishes. That is always one of the drawbacks of an in-form golfer who doesn’t qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs. Still, I remain optimistic that the trending data fits in perfectly with the long-term projections I had in my model for the 34-year-old American.
Spaun leads this field with 20 consecutive rounds of shooting par or better. Despite his break, I'm going to bet on his second-place Strokes Gained output over the past 24 rounds (trailing only Luke Clanton), and mix that in with his 10th-place grade in my sheet that he encountered when faced with an accessible scoring facility that allows wayward drives off the tee.
