2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic Picks

Spencer Aguiar: Nicolai Højgaard 66-1 (BetRivers)

This has not been the year I had envisioned for Nicolai Højgaard entering 2024. Outside of his early-season top 10s at the Dubai Desert Classic and Farmers Insurance Open, he has yet to post a top-15 finish on his resume in 12 starts since, including four missed cuts and an additional four finishes at 50th or worse.

While the recent statistics may not paint a rosy picture for one of the world's top-50 golfers, there are still reasons to be optimistic.

My model ranked Højgaard first in this field when combining Distance, Proximity and Putting into one grade to fit the venue, and it also found upside for him to use his length off the tee to overcome some of his recent questionable returns with the driver.

I'll take a shot on Højgaard continuing to gain with his irons, just like he has in eight of his 11 starts, and hope that the fourth-place rank for Driving Distance in my sheet catapults him back into contention.

I do want to note that his floor is extremely low, but the upside numbers are as strong as I have seen this season for the price in this field.

Greg Waddell: Cameron Young 17-1 (bet365)

In a wide open field, Camron Young is arguably in a tier of his own this weekend. After an absurd 59 last Saturday at the Travelers Championship, Young started out Sunday four-under par through his first four holes before ultimately a few poor shots did him in. But for 22 holes, he was out of his mind at 15-under par during that span, and that should translate to success this week at Detroit Golf Club.

This course is all about success off the tee, and Young thrives with the driver in hand. He ranks 31st in Driving Distance, 10th in Total Driving and 21st in overall Birdie or Better Percentage. It will be bombs away for everyone this weekend, and Young’s prowess with the big stick will give him a chance to lap the competition.

Young also has the best Strokes Gained: Total at Detroit Golf Club in his career out of everyone in the field. 17-1 feels short given the rest of the field this week.

Matt Gannon: Davis Thompson 40-1 (bet365)

A long time ago, a young Davis Thompson burst onto the scene as the first-round leader at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic with a Thursday 63.

Since then, he has played a ton of solid golf but is still yet to capture his first PGA Tour win. In 2024 he has gained some distance, which is important around Detroit Golf Club because golfers can bomb away here with little penalty for wayward drives.

Thompson has made both cuts in his trips to Detroit and enters with great ball-striking form. He posted his best result in a major championship when he tied for ninth at Pinehurst No. 2 and has two other top 20s since early May.

Thompson should be very confident knowing this is a great opportunity for him.

Tony Sartori: Maverick McNealy 30-1 (FanDuel)

Maverick McNealy has been trending upward recently, and Detroit Golf Club may be the perfect place for him to capitalize and grab his first PGA Tour win. He tied for 23rd at the PGA Championship and has continued to improve since with a tie for 17th at the Charles Schwab Challenge and a tie for seventh at the RBC Canadian Open.

It's no coincidence that this improvement in the Stanford product's form has coincided with an uptick in Driving Accuracy.

McNealy is obviously known for his short game, but he is a well-rounded golfer who only really possesses one downside: that aforementioned Driving Accuracy. However, that part of his game has improved immensely as he has been more accurate off the tee than the field in four consecutive tournaments — hence the improved finishing positions.

He’s also had success at this course, finishing in a tie for eighth here in 2020 and 21st in 2021. I'll continue to ride this upswing and take a shot on McNealy at 30-1.
