Shriners Children's Open Preview

Back to the regularly scheduled program as the PGA Tour heads to a venue we are used to seeing! TPC Summerlin is the host and we have plenty of data on the course as the tour has been playing here for decades. This par 71 is on the shorter side in terms of length and really lends itself to allowing short and accurate hitters to the top of the leaderboard.

The last four winners of this event are Tom Kim (twice), Sungjae Im, and Kevin Na. All of those golfers are below-average in driving distance but above average in driving accuracy. They had no problem getting lower than -20 and winning this event. That should tell you a little about what we are looking for in a golfer this week: Hit your fairways off the tee and get really hot with the putter!

Tom Kim (+1200) is the class of this field, as he opens up as the favorite and looks to win this event for the third straight time. Outside of the Presidents Cup, we have not seen Tom since the FedEx St. Jude. He comes into this event gaining strokes on approach in three straight starts, which is a great sign.

If he can pair that with solid driving, which he usually does well, Tom will be a part of the conversation. At 12/1, I prefer passing up on Tom and building a bigger card for this event.

We have not seen Davis Thompson (+2500) since the BMW Championship. He also has not gained on approach since his win at the John Deere Classic, which is a major concern.

Tom Hoge (+2800) comes in with one start under his belt for the fall. It was T7 at the Procore, gaining over six strokes on approach and another five on the greens. The driver did not look great, which he will need to dial in for this week. Generally, he is a very accurate driver of the golf ball. He has played this event seven times and has only missed one cut. He also has finished inside the top-10 twice.

Stephen Jaeger (+3000) narrowly got the job done in Utah last week. This man loves playing at elevation, which I stated last week. Jaeger gained strokes across the board last week. Once he starts playing well, it tends to stick, which is a great sign going forward.

What an impressive week it was for Matt McCarty +3500. He gained strokes across the board and looked extremely solid with a 54-hole lead in just his third PGA Tour start. He is on an all-world caliber run right now dating back to his 2024 Korn Ferry season, which includes multiple wins and a ton of top 10 finishes. I worry about the driving accuracy for him on a course like this.

Michael Thorbjornsen was playing alright before he withdrew from the Black Desert Championship. He was gaining strokes on approach and putting well, which is huge for him. If he is teeing it up here, I assume he is all well. The driver can really elevate his floor this week if it is on.

Taylor Pendrith +2500, Beau Hossler +3000, Seamus Power +3000, and Kurt Kitayama +3000 round out the golfers at 30/1 and below ahead of this week's Shriners Children's Open.
