2024 The American Express Odds & Preview
The PGA Tour heads to La Quinta, California for The American Express after Grayson Murray held off Byeong Hun An and Keegan Bradley in a three-man playoff on Sunday to win the Sony Open in Hawaii.
While Jon Rahm is not in the field this week to defend his title at The American Express, this week's field is among the strongest in the tournament's history with 22 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking, and it is highlighted by the No. 1 player in the world.
Scottie Scheffler predictably opened as the outright betting favorite to win The American Express at bet365 on Monday morning at +600 odds as he makes his fifth appearance in the desert. His odds have remained steady at +600 to win as of Wednesday afternoon.
Scheffler has put on a ball-striking clinic since the beginning of 2023 as he has made 21 official PGA Tour starts in that span and finished in the top 12 in 19 of those 21 starts. His two other finishes were a T23 and a T31 as he has been consistent but has somehow only won twice in this span because of his struggles on the greens.

The Texas Longhorn's season debut at The Sentry, where he finished T5, was more of the same as he led the field in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green but lost strokes putting as he finished four strokes behind eventual winner Chris Kirk.
This is Scheffler's fifth appearance at The American Express as he has made three of four prior cuts, with his best finish coming in 2020 when he was solo third.

Patrick Cantlay is next on the odds board behind Scheffler at +850 to win The American Express. The UCLA Bruin is making his sixth start in the desert, and in his four starts here since he became a PGA Tour member in 2014, he has finished in the top 26 all four times, including a solo second in 2021.
Cantlay is coming off of a T12 at The Sentry when he gained strokes off the tee, on approach, around the green and putting. His odds have drifted slightly to +950 to win as of Wednesday afternoon.
Cantlay's frequent partner in match play competition, Xander Schauffele, opened the third and final golfer at odds shorter than 20-1 this week at +1000 on bet365, and he has since moved slightly to +1200. The San Diego State Aztec has played this event three times before as he has had boom-or-bust results, with two missed cuts in 2016 and 2017 before a T3 here last year. Schauffele began his season with a T10 in a strong showing at Kapalua.
Justin Thomas also will make his season debut this week after skipping the Sony Open in Hawaii and failing to qualify for The Sentry. The 15-time PGA Tour winner opened with the fifth-shortest odds to win this week at +2200 on bet365 and now sits at +2400.
Thomas played three events in the fall as he finished in the top five of all three events: fifth at the Fortinet Championship, fourth on the DP World Tour's Nedbank Golf Challenge and third at the Hero World Challenge, an unofficial PGA Tour event. The Alabama product has played in The American Express just twice before as he missed the cut in 2014 before finishing T7 in 2015.
Min Woo Lee also makes his much anticipated PGA Tour season debut as he now has a full PGA Tour card for the first time in his career. The 25-year-old Australian has made five worldwide starts since October as he finished in the top 15 in all five events, highlighted by a win at the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship on the DP World Tour and another win at the SJM Macao Open on the Asian Tour.

Lee opened at +2800 outright odds to keep cooking and win his third title in his last six worldwide starts this week in the desert as he makes his tournament debut. He has since moved slightly to +3000 as of Wednesday afternoon.
Daniel Berger also returns to PGA Tour action this week for the first time since the 2022 U.S. Open after battling back injury. The four-time PGA Tour winner opened at +5500 odds to win this week as he makes his fourth start at The American Express. He has made two of three cuts at this event, highlighted by a T12 in 2019, but his odds have drifted to +9000 as of Wednesday afternoon.
Finally, some other notables in the field this week and their outright odds include Sungjae Im (+2200), Tom Kim (+2200), Si Woo Kim (+5000), Chris Kirk (+5500) and Davis Thompson (+9000).
2024 The American Express Course Preview
The American Express is the first event of the 2024 PGA Tour season that will be hosted by multiple courses: PGA West Stadium Course, PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course and La Quinta Country Club. All 156 golfers will play one round at each course before a 54-hole cut, and the final round will be held at the PGA West Stadium Course.
La Quinta Country Club is 7,060 yards,Ā PGA West Stadium Course is 7,187 yards, and PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course is 7,159 yards. All three courses are par-72s with four par-5s, 10 par-4s and four par-3s.
The PGA West Stadium Course is the only one of the three that has Shotlink data, which makes handicapping this week a bit more of a challenge than some other tournaments on Tour. Historically, golfers who have excelled on approaches from 50-125 yards, 150-175 yards and over 225 yards have been the most successful at the PGA West Stadium Course, which like TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course, was designed by Pete Dye.
These courses have relatively small greens and favor golfers who play aggressively, and the scores of past winners reflect that as every winner of The American Express in the past decade has been at least 20-under par. Strokes Gained (SG): Approach has historically had the highest correlation with SG: Total at the PGA West Stadium Course, followed by SG: Putting, SG: Around the Green and then SG: Off the Tee.
Like Pete Dye's design at his first Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, his final three holes at PGA West Stadium Course feature a risk-reward par-5, an island-green par-3 and a water-lined par-4 as his finishing stretch. He described these three holes as "maybe the most difficult finishing holes I've ever built."
