2024 The Sentry Golf Betting Predictions

A new year means a new season of the PGA Tour begins with The Sentry, formerly known as the Sentry Tournament of Champions, at the Plantation Course at Kapalua this week.

All champions from the last season on the PGA Tour and the top 50 from the FedExCup Playoffs have qualified for The Sentry, and 59 of the 60 eligible players are in the field this week as Rory McIlroy will not play this event again this year.

2024 The Sentry Course Preview

The Plantation Course is fairly long and pretty easy. 20-under par or better has won the event in eight of the past nine years. It measures nearly 7,600 yards for a par-73, but despite the length, shorter hitters still have found a way to compete. Kapalua has a tendency to turn into a bit of a putting contest because the greens are among the largest on Tour.

With the past two winners off to LIV, Harris English is the most recent champion in the field and joins past winners Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth. The ball-striking strengths for each differs, but all three are well above average putters.

2024 The Sentry Picks

I'm going to limit myself to two players this week. It's a little tough to predict The Sentry since most players are coming off long layoffs, and form is tough to judge.

I'll start here with Tom Kim at +3000 on FanDuel. Kim is accurate throughout the bag and one of the better putters on Tour. He was fifth here in his debut last year and is coming off a win during the fall in Las Vegas. He was playing some of the most consistent golf of his young career to close 2023, finishing inside the top 25 in his final nine starts worldwide.

I'm also going with one longshot play here with Akshay Bhatia at 150/1 on FanDuel. When Bhatia has popped up on leaderboards so far, it has primarily been on these easy resort-style courses. He's been very good with the driver to this point on Tour with above average length and accuracy. The irons are spotty, but he's shown the ability to gain strokes there.

However, his putter has held him back to this point. His struggles on the greens and the stronger field are obvious concerns, but at this price I'll take a chance on Bhatia at a course where he should feel comfortable.
