2024 WM Phoenix Open Odds & Preview

The PGA Tour heads to Scottsdale, Arizona for the 2024 WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale (Stadium Course). The WM Phoenix Open, also known as "The People's Open," is known for its huge and rowdy crowds, specifically the stadium 16th hole — a 163-yard par-3 enclosed by grandstands that seats 20,000 spectators.

The 2018 tournament set a PGA Tour record with 719,179 spectators over the entire week, although the WM Phoenix Open has not recorded daily or weekly attendance statistics since 2018.

This is the sixth event of the 2024 PGA Tour season after Wyndham Clark won his third event on Tour this past weekend at Pebble Beach by holding off Ludvig Ă…berg by one stroke after weather forced the Signature Event to be shortened to 54 holes. All three of Clark's PGA Tour wins have come in the last calendar year as his wins have all come at Signature Events or major championships.

As of Monday morning, Clark is in the field again this week for the 2024 WM Phoenix Open and opened with outright odds of +3700 at bet365 but is now +3000 as of Wednesday morning. The Oregon Duck will make his sixth WM Phoenix Open start this week as he has made the cut in three of his five appearances in the desert, including a career-best T10 last year.

Clark is looking up on the odds board to outright betting favorite Scottie Scheffler, who opened at +650 at bet365 on Monday morning and is now +480 as of Thursday morning.

The two-time defending WM Phoenix Open champion looks to successfully defend his title this week after winning this event in a playoff over Patrick Cantlay in 2022 and by two strokes last year over Nick Taylor. Scheffler continued his strong ball-striking this past weekend as he finished in a tie for sixth at Pebble Beach.

Viktor Hovland opened with the second-shortest outright odds to win this week at +1200. The reigning FedExCup champion is making his third start of the season after tying for 22nd at The Sentry and tying for 58th this past weekend at Pebble Beach. He is playing in his fourth WM Phoenix Open but has made the cut only once in three prior appearances, a tie for 42nd last year.

As of Monday at 8:30 a.m. ET, Hovland has since withdrawn from the WM Phoenix Open.

Like Hovland, Xander Schauffele also opened near the top of the odds board at +1100 outright odds to win this week despite a disappointing weekend on the Monterey Peninsula where he finished T54.

Also like Hovland, Schauffele has also withdrawn from the WM Phoenix Open as of Monday at noon ET.

Justin Thomas was the fourth and final golfer with outright odds of 15-1 or shorter as of Monday morning at bet365, when he opened at +1500 and moved to +1100 after Hovland and Schauffele withdrew. The Alabama product enters with momentum as he was second in the field at Pebble Beach in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green but couldn't get it going with his putter en route to a T6 finish. Thomas has now finished in the top six in each of his last five worldwide starts.

This will be Thomas' 10th WM Phoenix Open appearance, and he has finished in the top 13 in each of his last five starts at TPC Scottsdale, including a solo fourth here last year.

Some other notables in the field this week and their outright odds include Max Homa (+2200), Jordan Spieth (+2200), Sam Burns (+2700), Sungjae Im (+3700), and Hideki Matsuyama (+4500).

2024 WM Phoenix Open Course Preview

TPC Scottsdale (Stadium Course) is a 7,261-yard par-71 designed in 1919 by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morris in 1986 and renovated by Weiskopf in 2014.

Historically, over 55% of approach shots come from 125-200 yards, so golfers will need to be strong on approach from this range. After playing on the smallest greens on Tour last week at Pebble Beach (3,500 square feet on average), the putting surfaces at TPC Scottsdale average double the size this week at 7,069 square feet.

The greens this week are a Poa Trivialis and perennial rye overseed mix, which makes this the first event of the season with this exact putting surface.

Historically, Strokes Gained (SG): Approach and SG: Putting have been the most correlated with SG: Total at the WM Phoenix Open, although they are less correlated with SG: Total than at the average PGA Tour golf course. SG: Off the Tee and SG: Around the Green are both more correlated with SG: Total at TPC Scottsdale than at the average PGA Tour course.

Driving Accuracy has historically had a higher correlation with SG: Total than Driving Distance at TPC Scottsdale.
