ZOZO Championship Preview
Xander Schauffele +450 opens as the favorite this week in Japan. This is his fifth time playing in this event, as he always enjoys taking the trip to Japan. Sadly for Xander, this is a golf course that he has not had too much success on. In three trips to this course, he has one top-10 finish, but has failed to get into contention for the most part. He is the deserving favorite of this event, but it is tough to back a golfer at this number since we have not seen him play in a PGA Tour event since East Lake.
Defending ZOZO Champion, Collin Morikawa +700 returns, as he put the pedal down in Round 4 by shooting 7-under to win by six strokes over Eric Cole and Beau Hossler. Like Schauffele, we have not seen Collin play a Tour event since East Lake. He did look solid there and has also shown throughout his career that he is not afraid to get into the mix after a long break.
Japan Native and previous winner at this golf course Hideki Matsuyama will be a popular pick this week, and rightfully so. This event means so much to him, as he is very appreciative of the Japanese golf fans. He had a great end to his past PGA Tour season with a win in Memphis and had a nice showing as the leader of the International Presidents Cup team. His last two trips to this golf course resulted in less than stellar finishes, but I would assume Hideki posts a nice week in his home country. The approach play has been very solid dating all the way back to Scotland.
Sahith Theegala +1600 has a very impressive stat profile when you look into the results. His last two starts were a T7 at the Procore Championship and a 3rd place finish at the Tour Championship. Both of those weeks resulted in Sahith gaining strokes in every category. That is somewhat rare for Sahith, as he is generally a very sporadic ball striker with moments of greatness and moments of hectic play.
As much of a fan of Theegala I am, I would assume that his ball striking takes a slight dip this week. The Tour Championship week looked like a one-off pop for him, and the Procore was hosted on a course that suits his game perfectly. Sahith may struggle keeping the ball within the trees here which is never a great thing.
Will Zalatoris +3500 returns to action after sitting out since the BMW Championship in Colorado. In his career, he has one start on this golf course and it resulted in a T54 finish. He did not have a great 2024 season, but I like this spot as a nice little boosting pad for his upcoming campaign. Zalatoris gained strokes ball striking in his last four starts of the season and looked to be turning the tides in the right direction.
Justin Thomas +1800, Kurt Kitayama +2500, Beau Hossler +3000, and Min Woo Lee +3000 round out the golfers of 30/1 and below ahead of this 2024 ZOZO Championship.
