Nick Dunlap has arrived.
Dunlap entered The American Express with 400-1 odds, but the 20-year-old came away victorious Sunday.
He was +40000 at some sportsbooks pre-tournament and +35000 to win outright at Bet365, according to Action Network's odds post.
Dunlap is the third straight longshot winner on the PGA Tour to start the season. He follows Grayson Murray (+52500) and Chris Kirk (+12500).
Dunlap became the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson in 1991. He is the ninth amateur to win on the PGA Tour since 1940.
Dunlap is currently a sophomore at the University of Alabama, where he competes on the golf team. He won the U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills this past summer, entering him into The Masters, the U.S. Open and The Open Championship.
The winner of The American Express was set to make $1.512 million. Dunlap will not see any of that money since he competed as an amateur. That money will go to the second-place finisher Christiaan Bezuidenhout.
Dunlap will get a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour if he decides to turn pro. By turning pro, he would be forgoing his spot in The U.S. Open and The Open. But he could play his way into those events, especially with the world ranking points he earned with the win.
