The Outlook
Schwartzel has been very boom-or-bust this season: Over his past seven events, he has two top 10s and four missed cuts. And by missed cuts, I mean he sometimes wasn’t even particularly close. He’s been a bit better recently, especially with his irons, and missed the cut at the Memorial mostly because of a rough putter. The 33-year-old major winner has pretty solid history at U.S. Opens, but it’s hard to believe he’s fully ready to be back at a course such as Shinnecock. His odds aren’t great for someone who ranks 75th in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, so he’ll be a comfortable fade for me.
