One of the world's best golfers has withdrawn from the U.S. Open.
Jon Rahm has decided to pull out of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, according to ESPN's Marty Smith.
BREAKING NEWS: 2x Major Champion Jon Rahm has decided to withdraw from the US Open at Pinehurst, due to an infected sore located between the little toe and the next toe on his left foot, sources close to Rahm tell me.
I'm told the infection is healing with antibiotic treatment,…— Marty Smith (@MartySmithESPN) June 11, 2024
Rahm withdrew from last week's LIV Golf event in Houston during the first round, citing a foot injury. He traveled to Pinehurst and attempted to give it a go. According to Smith, the pain has proven to be too much to attempt to compete.
"The infection is healing with antibiotic treatment," Smith reported. "But Rahm remains in pain and does not want to compete in a tournament in which he does not believe he is physically capable of winning."
After consulting with numerous doctors and my team, I have decided it is best for my long term health, to withdraw from this weeks US Open Championship. To say I’m disappointed is a massive understatement! I wish all my peers the best of luck and want to thank all of the USGA…

Rahm was between +1000 and +1500 to win the U.S. Open at most sportsbooks heading into the week. All bets will be void, as Rahm did not start the tournament before withdrawing.
This time last year, Rahm was neck-and-neck with Scottie Scheffler as the No. 1 golfer in the world. He has fallen down to No. 8 in the world after a T45 finish at The Masters and a missed cut at the PGA Championship. His starts at LIV Golf do not count toward his world ranking, although he has yet to win a LIV event.
The U.S. Open has an alternate system based on open qualifying that will allow for a player to play in place of Rahm.
