LPGA golfer Lexi Thompson has accepted a sponsor's invite to play in the Shriners Children's Open on the PGA Tour next week.
Thompson will be the first female golfer to play on a full-field PGA Tour event since Brittany Lincicome did it in 2018 at the Barbasol Championship.
"I'm hopeful my ability to play with the men next week at The Shriners Children's Open sends a great message to the young women that you can chase your dreams regardless of how difficult they may seem." Thompson said in a statement on Instagram. "I cannot wait to come to the city of Las Vegas and I'm so grateful to the Shriners for this opportunity."
Thompson has played in the QBE Shootout — a 54-hole team event — as the only female in the field twice. She also made history at age 12 as the youngest ever to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open.
Despite being one of the most prominent names in women's golf, Thompson is currently ranked as the No. 25 women's golfer in the world.
Superbook released a proposition for Thompson to make the cut. She's +2500 to make the cut and -10000 to miss the cut the Shriners Children's Open.
There have been many women that tried to play in PGA Tour events. Michelle Wie West played in eight PGA Tour events in her career. She once shot 68 at the Sony Open, which is the lowest round on the PGA Tour by a female. She never made a cut.
Annika Sorenstam missed the cut by four shots in her lone appearance on the PGA Tour after shooting 71-74.
You would have to go back the 1945 — Babe Zaharias in the Phoenix and Tucson Opens — to find the last female to make the cut on a tour similar to the PGA Tour.
