Royal Liverpool Golf Club is hosting the 151st Open Championship, one of the most-anticipated majors of the season.
Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler, arguably the two most prominent names in golf, have won two of the past three events on the PGA Tour. They also finished first and second the last time the Open Championship was played in Hoylake.
The No. 1 player in the world, Scottie Scheffler, is the most popular bet of the week. Scheffler has finished fifth or higher in each of his past seven events. He has yet to win a major this season, but bettors expect that to change this week as he's getting 11.4% of the bets and accounts for 19.4% of the handle at BetMGM.
McIlroy is the other popular bet this week. The last time The Open was played at Royal Liverpool (2014), McIlroy won. That was also the last time McIlroy won a major. He is getting 98% of the bets and accounts for 14.3% of the handle at BetMGM.
Scheffler and McIlroy are the favorites (+750) and account for over two-thirds of the handle at BetMGM.
Brooks Koepka is also a popular bet and getting 6.8% of the bets (8.3% of the handle) at BetMGM.
Fowler opened at +15000 to win this year's Open when odds came out at BetMGM almost a year ago. He is down to +2200 and getting 5% of the bets and 4.9% of the handle.
Viktor Hovland, Cameron Smith, Jon Rahm and Tommy Fleetwood are a few of the other popular picks at BetMGM.
However, the sharp money appears to be on the two favorites with the massive amounts of money BetMGM has taken on McIlroy and Scheffler.
