It may not be the Run for the Roses, but this weekend's Arkansas Derby has the makings of a Triple Crown race.
Soon after the Kentucky Derby was moved to Sept. 5, Oaklawn Park announced it was shifting the Arkansas Derby — one of the most important prep races for the Triple Crown circuit — to May 2, essentially filling in the spot left vacated by the Kentucky Derby's switch to September.
Once it became official that the Arkansas Derby would run on the First Saturday in May, interest in climbed so much that it was announced that the field for the Arkansas Derby would be split into two divisions, each featuring an announced field of 11 horses.
And wouldn't you know, Bob Baffert has the favorite in each of the two headliners on Saturday.
No. 1 Charlatan (1-1) leads the way as an even-money favorite for the First Division, while No. 5 Nadal (5-2) is the horse to beat in the Second Division.
No. 4 Governeur Morris (9-2), No. 8 Anneau d'Or (6-1) and No. 11 Basin (8-1) are expected to be Charlatan's main competition in the first race, but there's no doubt that Baffert's horse is the class of this field.
The odds are a bit more bunched in the Second Division, with No. 4 King Guillermo (3-1), No. 11 Wells Bayou (9-2) and No. 3 Storm the Court (6-1) behind Nadal.
