The 150th Kentucky Derby is expected to be a massive event.
However, Mother Nature doesn't care about the milestone event and always has the opportunity to rear her ugly head. The forecast, as of Friday afternoon, isn't looking good.
Throughout the week, the forecast had called for morning showers with cloudy skies in the afternoon — meaning it would be clear by post time for the Kentucky Derby.
That's not the case any more.
Saturday is expected to be relatively warm with a high of 80 degrees. The weather is now expected to roll in during the afternoon.
"Cloudy in the morning with scattered thunderstorms developing later in the day. Very warm. High near 80F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 40%," Weather.com said on Friday afternoon.
The forecast expects the rain to come down in the afternoon, which could mean rain during the Kentucky Derby. Post time is set for 6:57 p.m. ET. It almost certainly means there will be a muddy track.
The horse to watch on a muddy track for the Kentucky Derby is Mystik Dan. He posted a 101 Beyer Speed number when he won the 2024 Southwest Stakes by eight lengths on a sloppy track.
